How to Choose a Beach Destination in Vietnam
You know you want sea and sand, but not which Vietnamese beach is right for your dates.
Choose a Vietnam beach in four steps: your month first, then flights, then crowd level, then trip style. The month matters most, because the south and the central coast have different wet seasons. Once the month is fixed, the choice usually narrows to one or two beaches.
Step 1: Which beaches work in your month?
Vietnam has more than one climate. The north has four seasons, while the centre and south have a rainy season and a dry season8.
Phu Quoc is rainy roughly April to November and dry roughly December to March5. On the central coast, which includes Da Nang and Nha Trang, the rainy season starts around August or September and peaks in October and November6. Da Nang lists its wet and typhoon season as September to December7.
So a mid-year holiday points to the central coast, and a year-end holiday points to Phu Quoc. See the weather by month guide for your exact month.
Step 2: Which beaches can you fly to?
Direct flights shape how much leave you spend travelling. KLIA lists Vietnam destinations including Da Lat, Da Nang, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang and Phu Quoc, though that list may be incomplete1.
Specific listings help. Phu Quoc has AirAsia and Sun PhuQuoc Airways2, Nha Trang’s airport lists AirAsia3, and Da Nang lists four airlines4. Mui Ne has no airport of its own here, so plan a road leg from Ho Chi Minh City. Check the direct flight routes for current schedules.
Step 3: How busy do you want it?
Pick a crowd level you will enjoy, not a number.
- Lively: a city beach such as Nha Trang or Da Nang, with cafes, a promenade and busy evenings.
- Spread out: a resort island such as Phu Quoc, where people disperse and evenings are quiet.
- Windy and active: Mui Ne, known for dunes and kitesurfing rather than swimming days.
Step 4: What kind of trip is it?
Match the base to your group.
- Toddlers or grandparents: short transfers and one base.
- Slow couples: a resort with a pool and a beach you can walk to.
- Sightseeing between beach days: Da Nang with Hoi An nearby.
- Active friends: Mui Ne, or Nha Trang for boat trips.
What should you check before booking?
- Whether your dates fall in your chosen beach’s wet window.
- Which airline serves it from your nearest airport.
- Whether school or public holidays push up prices on your dates.
- Whether your group can manage a road or boat transfer.

Common questions
Where should I start when choosing a Vietnam beach?
Start with your travel month, because it removes the beaches that are wet or rough at that time. Then check flights from your nearest airport, then the crowd level you can enjoy, then your trip style. Doing it in that order saves you from falling for a beach that is out of season on your dates.
Is there one beach that is good all year?
No single beach suits every month, because the south and the central coast have different wet seasons. The better question is which beach suits your month. A year-end holiday points to the south and the islands, and a mid-year holiday points to the central coast. Our month-by-month guide shows this side by side.
How do I judge crowd level without invented numbers?
Look at what the place is built for. A city beach has promenade traffic, many cafes and busy evenings. A resort island spreads people out, so beaches feel quieter but sea access depends on your hotel. School holidays and public holidays fill every beach, so book flights and rooms earlier for those dates.
Which beach base suits a family with toddlers?
Choose a base with short transfers, shade, calm water and an easy meal nearby. Da Nang and its beaches suit this well, and a resort on Phu Quoc suits families who want pool days. Nha Trang works if you plan the airport drive gently. Avoid bases that need long boat or road legs.
Can I add a second stop after the beach?
Yes, if your leave allows one extra move. Da Nang pairs naturally with Hoi An, and Phu Quoc pairs with Ho Chi Minh City by a short domestic flight. Keep the plan to one beach base plus one add-on, so you do not spend your holiday packing and unpacking.
