Family stays

Where to Stay in HCMC With Young Children

With small children, parks, a pool and an easy dinner matter more than a prime address.

For families with young children, Thao Dien is the gentlest base, with parks, cafes and calmer streets. District 1 is better when you want to see the sights on foot and can handle the crowds. In both, choose a hotel with a pool and a restaurant on site.

What should families look for in a stay?

Four things:

  • a park or playground within a short walk or ride;
  • a hotel pool;
  • restaurants that serve quickly and have plain dishes;
  • calmer streets, because traffic is the main stress.

Everything else is a bonus.

Why does Thao Dien suit toddlers?

It is a quiet, tree-lined neighbourhood. Parks, cafes and supermarkets are easy to reach, and the pace is calmer than in the centre. A pool at the hotel gives you a rest option on a hot afternoon.

You give up walking to sights. Plan fewer, longer outings, then come home before naps. Our comparison of District 1 or Thao Dien goes through it in more detail.

When does District 1 work for families?

When children are older and you want a short, sight-focused trip. The markets, landmarks and many restaurants are close, so you spend less time in the car. The cost is noise and traffic.

Pick a hotel on a side street, with a pool, and use ride-hailing for anything beyond a short walk. Grab operates in Vietnam and first launched in Ho Chi Minh City in 20142.

How do you manage the heat?

Ho Chi Minh City has a tropical savanna climate, with a rainy season roughly May to November1. Plan outings for the morning, rest at midday and swim in the afternoon. Carry water, sun hats and light clothes for everyone.

What about emergencies?

In Vietnam, the emergency number for an ambulance or first aid is 1153. Save it in your phone, and keep your hotel address ready in Vietnamese.

Common questions

Which area of HCMC is best for toddlers?

Thao Dien is gentler for toddlers, with parks, cafes and calmer streets. District 1 suits families who want to see sights on foot but is busy and loud. Choose a hotel with a pool in either, because a swim fixes a hot, tired afternoon.

Is Ho Chi Minh City traffic safe for children?

It needs care. Scooters are everywhere, pavements can be blocked and crossing takes patience. Hold hands near roads, use a carrier rather than a wide stroller on busy streets, and take a ride-hailing car for any longer hop.

How do we handle meals with fussy eaters?

Look for areas with plain rice, noodle, chicken and fruit options within a short walk, and keep snacks in the bag. Hotel breakfasts and international cafes are an easy fallback. Pick restaurants that serve quickly, as hungry children wait poorly.

What if a child becomes ill during the trip?

Ring 115 for an ambulance in an emergency, and keep your insurance details and a list of medicines to hand. Ask your hotel to help with a nearby clinic or hospital. Carry basic remedies from home, plus rehydration salts.
