Cao Bang and Ban Gioc for Return Visitors
A second-trip loop works when the long road days are named before you go.
Cao Bang and Ban Gioc are worth it if you have done the classic north and want somewhere quieter. The price is two long road days from Hanoi. This loop keeps those days honest, so you can decide before you book.
Who is this route for?
It suits return visitors and photographers who have already done Ha Long and Sapa. You should be comfortable with long drives and simple stays. It is not designed for toddlers, elders who tire on the road, or a trip of fewer than four days.
If you are still choosing between remote northern trips, read Cao Bang or Ha Giang first.
The route at a glance
- Day 1: Hanoi to Cao Bang, a full road day.
- Day 2: Ban Gioc Waterfall and the nearby cave.
- Day 3: countryside, viewpoints and a slow afternoon.
- Day 4: Cao Bang back to Hanoi, a full road day.
- Day 5 (optional): a spare day for weather or a slow Hanoi morning.
How honest are the road times?
We leave out an hour count, because road works, stops and traffic change the day. Instead, treat Day 1 and Day 4 as a full block each. Leave at breakfast, stop for lunch and a rest, and arrive in the late afternoon.
Use our travel-day checker with your own start time. If the total looks heavy, add the spare day rather than cutting the waterfall.
Day by day
Day 1: Hanoi to Cao Bang
Start early with a private car. Eat lunch on the road and stop for toilet breaks. Do not plan any sightseeing. Check in, rest and eat early.
Day 2: Ban Gioc Waterfall
The waterfall sits on the border, so take your passport. Go in the morning when the light is soft. After a rainy spell, the falls usually carry more water.
Walk the paths slowly and take photos from several points. Visit the nearby cave after lunch, when the day is hot. Read Ban Gioc Waterfall for what to expect.
Day 3: countryside and viewpoints
Spend the day on the roads around Cao Bang. Stop at village markets, mountain viewpoints and rice fields, depending on the season. Keep the afternoon free for rest.
If the weather is poor, swap this day with the waterfall day. See Cao Bang for the area overview.
Day 4: back to Hanoi
Leave after breakfast and travel back to Hanoi. Book an evening flight, not a midday one, and add the spare day if your flight is tight.
When should you go?
Central and southern Vietnam have two seasons, while the north has four2. In the north, rain can make roads slow and views dull, while clear weather suits viewpoints. Check the forecast for your dates, and keep one flexible day.
Where should you stay?
Choose areas, not hotel names. In Cao Bang, stay in or near town for meals and facilities, or near the waterfall for a quieter morning. Ask what each stay includes, including breakfast and heating.
What should you book ahead?
- A private car with a driver who knows the route.
- Flights, ideally arriving the day before the loop starts.
- Stays near the waterfall, which are limited.
- A spare day, in case rain slows the roads.

How can you adjust it?
For three days, drop the countryside day and accept little buffer. For six days, add a night in Hanoi at each end. For more second-trip ideas, read Beyond the first circuit.
What will it cost?
Price the private car by day, four nights, entries and meals as separate lines. The Bank Negara rate showed 0.0158 ringgit per 100 Vietnamese dong (VND) on 15 October 20263, so convert quotes on the day you pay. Use the trip budget builder and browse more routes in itineraries.

Common questions
How many days do Cao Bang and Ban Gioc need?
Give it four or five days from Hanoi. Two of those days are mostly on the road, which leaves two or three for the waterfall and the countryside. A three-day version is possible but feels rushed and leaves almost no weather buffer.
How long is the road from Hanoi?
Treat each way as a full day. We leave out an hour count here, because road works, stops and traffic change it. Use our travel-day checker with your own start time, and plan nothing else on those two days.
Is it better with a private car?
For most plans, yes. Public transport to the border area is limited, and you need flexibility at the waterfall and caves. Our guide on why remote regions often need a private tour explains what to ask for.
What is there beyond Ban Gioc?
Cao Bang town, a nearby cave, mountain viewpoints and village life. The area is quiet, with fewer facilities than Sapa or Ha Long. If you want a bigger choice of food and stays, add a night in Hanoi at the start and end.
Do we need any special paperwork?
This is a border area, so carry your passport on every day of the trip. Ask your driver or host whether any local permit or check applies for your dates, because rules can change. Confirm entry rules for your own flight from the official sources.
