Con Dao for Return Visitors

A quiet island stay that mixes history sites with empty beaches, reached by a short flight.

Con Dao suits return visitors who want a quiet island and do not need a resort strip. Give it three or four nights, treat the flight from Ho Chi Minh City as the key step, and alternate history days with beach days. This route does that, and it names the checks you must make yourself.

Who is this route for?

It suits return visitors who have already seen the main Vietnamese cities and want somewhere calm. It suits slow couples best, and quiet-minded friends. It is not a fit for a group wanting nightlife, big attractions or a packed schedule. For that kind of island, see Con Dao or Phu Quoc.

How do we reach Con Dao?

Fly to Ho Chi Minh City first. Tan Son Nhat has IATA code SGN and ICAO code VVTS1, which you will see on your tickets. Then take a short domestic flight to the island.

We cannot give you operators, fares or schedules, because they are not in our fact list and change by season. Book the island leg and the Malaysia leg together if you can, and leave a buffer so a late arrival does not strand you. Our Ho Chi Minh City guide covers the transfer day.

What is the route at a glance?

  • Day 1: Ho Chi Minh City to Con Dao, settle in, a short evening walk.
  • Day 2: history sites in the morning, a quiet beach in the afternoon.
  • Day 3: a boat or snorkel day if conditions are good, otherwise a slow beach day.
  • Day 4: a last walk, then the flight back.

Day by day

Day 1: arrive and settle

Keep the first day short. Check in, walk to the nearest waterfront and eat a simple dinner. A flat evening helps after the flight.

Day 2: history, then beach

Con Dao’s past as a place of imprisonment is the reason visitors come. Visit the historic prison buildings and the island’s cemetery in the morning, when it is cooler and quieter.

These are sombre places. Dress modestly, speak softly and take breaks. Share only as much detail with children as feels right. Our guide to Con Dao explains the sites.

After lunch, go to a quiet beach and do nothing. The south has two seasons, a rainy season and a dry season2, and the rainy season starts in May3. Check the forecast before you commit to an open-air afternoon.

Day 3: sea day or slow day

If the sea is calm, join a small boat trip for snorkelling or an island visit. Pick an operator who provides life jackets and cancels in rough weather. Do not pressure anyone to go out.

If the weather is poor, swap this day with your slow day. Vietnam is affected by 6 to 8 typhoons or tropical cyclones a year4, so build one buffer day into the plan.

The park authorities set rules for turtle nesting and visits. We cannot give season dates, so ask the park or your hotel and follow the rules. Do not touch nests or use flash.

Day 4: a last walk and the flight

Keep the morning free. A short walk, a slow coffee and an early airport arrival make the trip end well, since small aircraft rarely wait.

Where should we stay?

Choose areas, not hotel names. The town side makes walking, meals and the airport easy. A beach-side stay is quieter but means you depend on transfers. Compare rates yourself, because prices change by season.

How can we adjust it?

For a shorter trip, take two nights, but know the flights use most of your time. For a slower trip, add a fourth night and drop the boat day. With older relatives, read Vietnam islands for seniors and slow pace. To compare dive and snorkel options, read Snorkelling and diving islands compared.

What should we book ahead?

  • Both flights, first, because the island leg limits your dates.
  • A hotel with a clear cancellation rule.
  • A car and driver for the history day.
  • Any boat trip, with a weather-cancellation promise in writing.

What will it cost?

Price it in lines: Malaysia to Ho Chi Minh City, the island flight, three or four nights, a car, boat trips and meals. Prices change by season, so use today’s quotes in the trip budget builder. For a fuller retreat plan, read Con Dao retreat itinerary, or browse more itineraries.

If you share your dates and where you will fly from, we can check the Ho Chi Minh City connection and whether three or four nights suits the weather window.

Common questions

How do we reach Con Dao from Ho Chi Minh City?

By a short domestic flight from Tan Son Nhat. Operators, fares and schedules are not in our fact list and change by season, so check airline sites directly and book early, because aircraft are small. Allow a spare day on either side of your tight connections.

How many days does Con Dao need?

Three nights is a good length. That gives one history day, one beach or boat day and one slow day in between. Two nights feels rushed once you count the flights. Four nights suit couples who want to do nothing and see the island at their own pace.

Is Con Dao suitable for children or grandparents?

Yes, with a quiet pace. The roads are calm and distances are short. But some history sites involve walking and sensitive stories, so choose one a day. Beaches are best at the calmer times of year, and a car with a driver is easier than a motorbike.

What is the weather like?

The south has a rainy season starting in May and a drier season earlier in the year. Sea conditions matter more here than in a city, so keep one buffer day and check forecasts. We avoid giving monthly rainfall for the island because our fact list does not cover it.

Are there halal meal options?

Options are limited and we cannot name a place as certified. Ask your hotel in advance what it can prepare, bring dry snacks, and favour seafood and vegetables. Check the Muslim travellers guide for the questions to ask about kitchens and suppliers.
