Ha Long, Lan Ha and Cat Ba for Couples
Choose between one night on a boat and a land base before you book anything.
For a slower couple’s trip, base on Cat Ba and take a boat day on Lan Ha. Choose a one-night cruise only if the night on the water is what you want to remember. The rest of this page builds a four-day plan around that choice.
Who is this route for?
It suits couples who want a quiet, flexible bay trip without a long checklist. It also suits budget-aware couples, because the Cat Ba base lets you control meals and extras. It is not designed for families with toddlers, who need shorter transfers.
Ha Long Bay was inscribed in 19941. Lan Ha and Cat Ba sit alongside it in the same limestone landscape. Read Ha Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba Island for what each offers.
Cruise night or Cat Ba base?
| Question | One cruise night | Cat Ba base plus boat day |
|---|---|---|
| Where you sleep | On the boat | On land |
| Fixed schedule | Yes, set by the boat | Mostly yours |
| Privacy | Shared decks and meals | Your own room and table |
| Weather risk | Whole trip can change | One day to swap |
| Time on land | Very little | More |
| Best for | A night on the water | Slow days and flexibility |
The table compares the same things for both. If you want to read the choice in more detail, see Cat Ba Island or Lan Ha Bay.
The four-day plan at a glance
- Day 1: Hanoi to Cat Ba, settle in and watch sunset.
- Day 2: a boat day through Lan Ha, with a swim stop.
- Day 3: a land day on Cat Ba, with a hike or a beach.
- Day 4: a calm morning, then back to Hanoi.
Day by day
Day 1: Hanoi to Cat Ba
Cat Bi airport near Haiphong lists no Malaysian airlines or destinations2, so you reach the bay by road from Hanoi. The transfer, with a ferry or boat leg, takes most of a morning, so plan to arrive at lunch.
Check in, rest and walk the waterfront at sunset. Keep dinner simple.
Day 2: a boat day on Lan Ha
Book a private or small-group boat for the day. Paddle a kayak, stop at a quiet beach and swim if the water looks calm. Return to Cat Ba before dark.
If the weather is poor, swap this with Day 3 and keep the land day for later.
Day 3: a land day on Cat Ba
Hike a short trail in the national park or relax at a beach. Eat a slow lunch, nap and take a walk in the evening. This is your rest day built into the plan.
Day 4: back to Hanoi
Keep the morning free. Take the boat or ferry and the road back to Hanoi. Book an evening flight, not midday, so a delay does not break your trip.
If you choose the cruise night instead
Replace Day 1 and Day 2 with a cruise: travel from Hanoi to the bay, board in the afternoon, sleep on the boat and disembark mid-morning. Then spend Day 3 and Day 4 on Cat Ba or in Hanoi.
A cruise gives you a night on the water, but you will have little free time and a fixed programme. Check what is included before you pay.
Where should you stay?
Choose areas, not hotel names. On Cat Ba, a place near the waterfront is convenient, while a quieter bay side gives privacy. For a cruise, check the cabin, the meal arrangements and the number of boats in the group.
How can you adjust it?
For five days, add a second land night or a quiet day. For three days, take only the boat day. The delta’s rainy season runs roughly April or May to October or November3, so keep the last day flexible.
What should you book ahead?
- Your flight to Hanoi first.
- The door-to-door transfer to Cat Ba.
- The boat day for Lan Ha.
- A cruise cabin, if you choose that option.
What will it cost?
Price flights, four nights, transfers, the boat day and meals as separate lines. Rates change by season, so enter current quotes in the trip budget builder. To compare coastal and mountain options, see North Vietnam mountains or coast, and browse Regions and where to go.

Common questions
Is a cruise night or a Cat Ba base better for couples?
A cruise night suits couples who want a night on the water and a set programme. A Cat Ba base suits couples who want privacy, flexible days and time on land. If your budget is tight or you dislike fixed schedules, the Cat Ba plan usually gives you more control.
Is Lan Ha Bay quieter than Ha Long Bay?
Lan Ha is usually the quieter and calmer of the two, with smaller groups of boats. Both share a similar limestone look. Plenty of couples choose Lan Ha with a Cat Ba base for the slower feel. Read our Cat Ba or Lan Ha guide for the detail.
How do we get to Cat Ba from Hanoi?
The usual route is by road and then a ferry or boat, arranged as a door-to-door transfer. Cat Bi airport near Haiphong lists no Malaysian airlines or destinations, so fly into Hanoi. Treat the transfer as most of a morning, and avoid tight connections.
How many days do we need?
Four days is enough for a calm version. Day 1 is travel to the bay, Day 2 a boat day, Day 3 a land day, and Day 4 the return to Hanoi. Add a night if you want a spare day for weather, which can cancel boats at short notice.
When is the best time to go?
Pick the cooler, drier months for clearer views and calmer water. The delta rainy season runs roughly April or May to October or November, peaking July and August. Storm warnings can stop boats, so keep your return day flexible.
