Itinerary

Hanoi, Ha Long, Da Nang and Hoi An in a Week

Add the bay to a north and central route, and know in advance which day will feel tight.

Seven days can hold Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Da Nang and Hoi An, but it does not hold them gently. This plan adds the bay to a north and central route and tells you in advance which days feel tight. Knowing that makes the trip easier to enjoy.

Who is this route for?

It suits first-timers and couples on a budget who want heritage, a famous bay and a lantern town in one week. It also suits friends who like to move. It is less comfortable for toddlers and elders, and for anyone who dislikes early starts. If that sounds like you, compare it with Ninh Binh versus Ha Long Bay.

Malaysian ordinary passport holders can enter Vietnam without a visa for 30 days1. Check the official sources before you travel.

The seven days at a glance

  • Day 1: arrive in Hanoi.
  • Day 2: the Old Quarter and the citadel.
  • Day 3: to Ha Long Bay and an evening on the water.
  • Day 4: the bay, then back to Hanoi (a tight day).
  • Day 5: fly to Da Nang and go on to Hoi An.
  • Day 6: a full day in Hoi An.
  • Day 7: back to Da Nang and fly home (a tight day).

How do you fly in and out?

Kuala Lumpur to Hanoi is listed with AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air2. Da Nang to Kuala Lumpur is listed with the same four3. That makes an open-jaw ticket, in at Hanoi and out at Da Nang, a natural fit and saves a backtracking flight.

Day by day

Day 1: arrive in Hanoi

Noi Bai airport is about 35 km northeast of downtown4, so plan the transfer. Check in, eat nearby and rest. If you land late, this is only a night.

Day 2: the Old Quarter and the citadel

Walk the Old Quarter early. The central sector of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long was inscribed in 20105. Rest at midday and return at dusk. The Hanoi guide explains the areas.

Day 3: to Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay was inscribed in 1994 and later extended6. Leave after breakfast and treat this as your long road day. Board a boat or choose a land base, and keep the evening quiet. Ask the operator about meals in advance.

Day 4: the bay, then Hanoi (tight)

Spend the morning on the water and travel back after lunch. This is the first tight day. Protect a calm dinner and an early night, and book your Da Nang flight for the next morning only if you are comfortable with that margin. Read about the bay in the Ha Long Bay guide.

Day 5: fly to Da Nang and go on to Hoi An

Fly in the morning and take a car to Hoi An. Hoi An lies some 28 km south of Da Nang7. Check in, rest and spend the evening on the old town lanes, early.

Day 6: a full day in Hoi An

Hoi An Ancient Town was inscribed in 19998. Walk early, rest in the heat and return for the lanterns. This is your one calm day, so do not fill it. The Hoi An guide lists the zones.

Day 7: back to Da Nang and home (tight)

This is the second tight day. Pack the night before, travel to the airport with margin and avoid any morning sightseeing if your flight is before noon. If your flight is late, add a short walk or a last coffee.

Overnight or day trip for Ha Long?

Choose the overnight if your flights allow, because the evening on the water is the point of Ha Long. Choose a day trip only if you must keep both nights in cities. Either way, plan most of a day for the road. The guide to Cat Ba or Lan Ha Bay lists calmer alternatives.

What should you drop first?

  1. The Ha Long overnight, turned into a quiet Hanoi day.
  2. The second Hanoi activity.
  3. The half day in Da Nang.

Keep Hanoi and Hoi An as the core. More detail is in where to cut days on a north-to-south route.

When should you travel?

Da Nang lists September to December as its wet and typhoon season9. In those months, keep Day 5 and Day 6 flexible, and be ready to swap or shorten them.

What should you book ahead?

  • Your international flights and the internal flight.
  • The Ha Long boat or land base, with meals confirmed.
  • Airport transfers and a car to Hoi An.
  • Halal checks in each city, with a certificate and issuer you can name.

What will it cost?

Price the trip in lines: international flights, one internal flight, six nights, the bay, transfers, meals and extras. Rates change by season, so use the trip budget builder with current quotes, and run the two tight days through the travel-day checker.

Share your flight times and whether you prefer an overnight or day trip for Ha Long, and we can say where this week gets tightest for you and what to drop first.

Common questions

Is one week enough for Hanoi, Ha Long, Da Nang and Hoi An?

It is enough for a first sample, but tight. You travel on at least three days and do the bay in a short window. If you accept some rushing, it works. If you want a relaxed pace, drop Ha Long or give the trip eight or nine days instead.

Is Ha Long better as an overnight or a day trip?

The overnight gives a calmer evening on the water and a better chance of seeing the bay properly, but it costs a night and a morning. A day trip saves that time yet means two long road legs in one day. In a one-week plan, choose by your flight times.

Where does this itinerary get tightest?

Day 4 and Day 7. On Day 4 you return from Ha Long and may need to fly the next morning. On Day 7 you leave Hoi An and catch an international flight. Give both days extra margin and avoid plans for the evening before each.

What should we drop first if time shrinks?

Turn the Ha Long overnight into a quiet Hanoi day. Then drop the second Hanoi activity, then the Da Nang half day. This keeps Hanoi and Hoi An as the core. Never drop the buffer morning on the last day.

Is this suitable for children or elders?

It can be, but it is demanding. The bay day and the flight day are long, so choose a private car for the road legs, rest after each transfer and drop one stop. For toddlers or elders, a calmer two-city plan is easier.
