Itinerary

Ho Chi Minh City to Da Lat, Slowly

Leave the heat of the city for cool hills, and choose the leg that suits you.

This plan spends two days in Ho Chi Minh City and three in Da Lat, with the highland leg chosen on how much leave you have. Fly if time is short and ride if you want the view. If you fly from Kuala Lumpur, you may be able to skip the city and go to Da Lat directly.

Who is this plan for?

It suits slow couples who want cool air and long coffee mornings, and friends who prefer a loop of cafes and viewpoints over temple lists. It does not suit anyone who wants big sights each day. For that, see the Ho Chi Minh City, Cu Chi and Mekong plan.

The plan at a glance

  • Day 1: arrive in Ho Chi Minh City, walk District 1.
  • Day 2: city day with museums or a market, evening on the river.
  • Day 3: travel to Da Lat by air or coach, easy evening.
  • Day 4: slow highland day, cafes and viewpoints.
  • Day 5: a second highland loop, return to the airport.

How should you get from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Lat?

You have three choices. Weigh them on time and comfort, not on a headline price.

Lien Khuong Airport (DLI)2 is about 30 km south of Da Lat3. So even a short flight ends with a drive of its own.

The Kuala Lumpur link is useful. Lien Khuong lists AirAsia flights to Kuala Lumpur International1. If that suits your dates, you can fly in and out of Da Lat and spend the whole stay in the hills.

Day by day

Day 1: arrive in Ho Chi Minh City

Tan Son Nhat (SGN)4 is the airport, with Kuala Lumpur flights listed on Malaysia Airlines, VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines and AirAsia5. Check in, rest, and walk in District 1 after dark.

Day 2: a city day with rest

Choose either a museum morning or a market morning. Rest after lunch. In the evening, walk the river or eat street food, and pack for the hills.

Ho Chi Minh City has a rainy season roughly May to November and a dry season December to April6. Plan your city outings for the cooler start of the day. Our Ho Chi Minh City guide lists the main sights.

Day 3: the leg to Da Lat

Leave after breakfast. If you fly, allow for the airport, the flight and the transfer into town. If you ride, take a daytime coach, carry a jacket, snacks and a travel bag you can reach, and expect the last stretch to wind uphill.

Check in and keep the evening easy. A night walk in the cool air is enough.

Day 4: a slow highland day

Spend the morning at a cafe on a hill and the afternoon on a short loop, such as a lake walk or a garden. Do not add a long list of sights. The point of Da Lat is the air.

Day 5: another loop and the way out

Take a gentle second loop in the morning, such as a market and a viewpoint. Then head for your flight. If you fly from Lien Khuong, remember the road to the airport.

Where should you stay?

  • Ho Chi Minh City: District 1 for a first visit.
  • Da Lat: the town centre if you like walking, or a quieter ridge if you prefer views.

Read the Da Lat page for the stay zones. Compare rates yourself.

How can you adjust it?

If you have only four days, take the flight and drop one city day. If you have more time, add a night in Da Lat rather than a new town. If you want a different highland stop, compare Da Lat or Buon Ma Thuot. The Central Highlands overview shows the wider picture.

What should you book ahead?

  • Flights, and the Da Lat leg if you are flying.
  • A Da Lat stay in your chosen zone.
  • The airport or coach transfer, confirmed in a message.

What will it cost?

Price the flights, five nights, the Da Lat leg, meals and rides as separate lines. Prices change by season, so put today’s quotes into the trip budget builder. For other mountain options, see Vietnam mountain regions compared or browse all itineraries.

Tell us whether you prefer to fly or ride, and the days you can take, and we can check whether the Da Lat leg fits your flights without stealing a day.

Common questions

Is it better to fly or take a coach from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Lat?

Fly if your leave is short, since the coach uses most of a day. Take the coach if you like seeing the land change and have time to spare. For a calm trip, travel in daylight, not overnight, and keep the rest of the day empty.

Can we fly straight from Kuala Lumpur to Da Lat?

Lien Khuong Airport lists AirAsia flights to Kuala Lumpur International, so a direct flight is possible. This lets you skip the connection and spend your days in the highlands. Check the airline's own schedule, because routes and days change.

How far is the Da Lat airport from the town?

Lien Khuong Airport is about 30 km south of Da Lat. That means you need a transfer by car or shuttle after landing. Book it in advance and add it to the time cost of the flight when you compare it with the coach.

How many nights does Da Lat need?

Two to three nights suit a slow pace. Da Lat rewards walking, cafes, cool air and short outings rather than a long list of sights. Three nights is the number we use in this plan for couples and for friends.

What do we pack for the cooler hills?

A light jacket or cardigan, a rain layer and closed shoes. The highlands feel cooler than the city, especially in the evening and early morning. Hot cities and cool hills in one trip mean a small change of clothes, not a heavy wardrobe.
