Ho Chi Minh City With a Toddler
Four days built around naps, shade and the car seat you cannot assume you will find.
A toddler can enjoy Ho Chi Minh City if the day is built around sleep. Go out in the morning, rest in the heat, then do one easy thing in the late afternoon. The biggest practical question is the car seat, so settle it before you fly.
Who is this plan for?
It suits parents with a child from walking age to about school age, and families who want a city break without a punishing pace. If grandparents come along, read the easy-pace plan with grandparents too.
For a calmer countryside add-on, see the Ben Tre family homestay. For wider family advice, read the South Vietnam families guide.
The plan at a glance
- Day 1: arrive, settle, a short evening walk.
- Day 2: a morning park or zoo visit, rest, an indoor play stop.
- Day 3: a museum or aquarium morning, nap, a river-side supper.
- Day 4: a slow morning and the flight home.
How do you get there from Malaysia?
Tan Son Nhat (SGN)1 is the airport, and Kuala Lumpur flights are listed with Malaysia Airlines, VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines and AirAsia2. Pick a flight that lands before your child’s tired window if you can.
What about the car seat?
Do not assume you will find one. Grab operates in Vietnam5, but a ride-hailing car may have no child seat.
Ask any private driver or operator these questions in writing:
- Is a seat for my child’s size provided?
- Will the seat be fitted before pickup?
- If not, can you wait while I fit our own?
If the answer is no, bring a light folding booster or a travel seat that fits a normal car. Keep short rides to a minimum.
Day by day
Day 1: arrive and settle
Check in, rest and eat close to the hotel. A short evening walk is plenty. Ask the hotel for a pharmacy and a clinic nearby.
Day 2: a morning outdoors, an afternoon indoors
Visit a park or a zoo in the early morning, when it is cooler, and let your child walk or run. Return to the hotel before the heat peaks, and nap.
After the nap, go to an indoor stop such as a mall play area. Eat an early dinner and go to bed at the usual hour.
Day 3: a museum or an aquarium
Pick one indoor outing for the morning, such as an aquarium or a children’s museum. Keep the visit short. Nap at the hotel.
In the late afternoon, take a gentle riverside walk. Bring a carrier in case your child tires. Eat dinner early and head back.
Day 4: fly home
Keep the morning slow. Pack the night before. Reach the airport early, since queues and delays with a toddler are slower than you expect.
Is a stroller practical?
On city pavements, not really. Pavements can be uneven, motorbikes park on them and kerbs are high. A baby carrier or a light fold-up stroller you can lift is more useful. Use a full stroller in malls, hotels and the airport.
How do you manage the heat and the traffic?
Ho Chi Minh City has a tropical savanna climate, with a rainy season roughly May to November and a dry season December to April3. It is warm all year, so go out early and rest from late morning.
Hold your child’s hand near roads, and never carry a toddler on a motorbike. Use a car with a driver and a proper seat for longer rides. Our guide to hot South Vietnam has more.
What do you pack for health and food?
- Snacks, a bottle and formula or milk if needed.
- Wipes, sun cream, a hat and a light cover for cold air conditioning.
- A simple kit with fever medicine, plasters and rehydration salts.
- A water bottle. Drink bottled or boiled water.
Vietnam’s ambulance and first-aid number is 1154. Keep your insurance details on your phone and ask your hotel where the nearest clinic is. Choose mild, plain dishes where you can see the cooking.
Where should you stay?
Stay in District 1, close to the outings, in a hotel with a lift, a family room and a quiet corner. Compare rates yourself, and ask whether cots and baby chairs are available.
How can you adjust it?
For a younger toddler, drop Day 3’s second outing and rest more. For an older child, add a longer visit or a short boat ride. Browse the Ho Chi Minh City guide for other options.
What will it cost?
Price flights, three nights, rides, tickets and food as separate lines. Prices change by season, so enter today’s quotes in the trip budget builder. For other plans, see all itineraries.

Common questions
Are car seats available in Ho Chi Minh City?
Do not assume so. A ride-hailing car may have no child seat. Ask a private driver or tour operator, in writing, whether a seat for your child's size is provided. If not, bring a light folding booster or a travel seat that fits a normal car.
How do we plan around naps?
Go out in the morning, return to the hotel before the nap and rest through the heat. Book a hotel close to the sights so the journey home does not wake the child. Use the afternoon for an indoor stop after the nap, then dinner early.
Is a stroller practical there?
On city pavements, not really. Surfaces are uneven, motorbikes park on them and kerbs are high. A baby carrier or a light, fold-up stroller that you can lift is more useful. Use the stroller in malls, the airport and hotels.
What indoor places work on hot or wet days?
Look at mall play areas, an aquarium, a children's museum and cafes with a play corner. Check opening days before you go, and ask your hotel to confirm a place suits your child's age. Keep a short list ready for the afternoon.
What do we pack for food and health?
Pack snacks, a bottle and formula or milk if needed, wipes, sun cream, a hat and a simple medicine kit. Drink bottled or boiled water. Vietnam's ambulance number is 115. Choose mild, plain dishes and avoid anything you cannot see being cooked.
