Ho Chi Minh City With Grandparents, Gently
Three unhurried days for grandparents, with the heat and the traffic kept at arm's length.
Ho Chi Minh City can be a good city for grandparents when you shrink the day. Keep to one area, use a car with a driver and rest through the hottest hours. This plan gives three unhurried days with sights that ask for little walking.
Who is this plan for?
It suits families with grandparents, and seniors travelling with adult children. You want to see the city but you cannot manage long walks, steps or the midday heat.
If your family also has small children, read the Ho Chi Minh City toddler plan. For wider planning, see the South Vietnam families guide.
The plan at a glance
- Day 1: arrive, rest, a short evening stroll near the hotel.
- Day 2: the cathedral, post office and a seated cultural show.
- Day 3: a river cruise or a slow market visit, then a long rest and the flight.
How do you get there from Malaysia?
Tan Son Nhat (SGN)1 is the airport. Kuala Lumpur flights are listed with Malaysia Airlines, VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines and AirAsia2. For elders, a daytime flight is kinder than a red-eye, and an airport wheelchair can be requested when you book.
Day by day
Day 1: arrive and settle
Check in, rest and eat close to the hotel. A short stroll in the cool of the evening is plenty. Ask the hotel for the clinic and the pharmacy near them.
Day 2: low-walking sights
Go in the morning. The Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office sit close together, and you can see both with a short walk on flat ground. Ask your driver to wait.
Return to the hotel for lunch and a long rest. In the late afternoon or evening, see a seated water puppet show or another indoor performance. Ask about steps at the venue before booking.
Day 3: the river or the market
Choose one. A river cruise lets everyone sit in the breeze with no walking. A visit to a market is lively but crowded, so go early, move slowly and pick one lane.
After lunch, rest. Leave for the airport with plenty of time. Do not plan a sight on the day of travel.
How do you keep the heat manageable?
Ho Chi Minh City has a tropical savanna climate, with a rainy season roughly May to November and a dry season December to April3. It is warm all year.
Do outdoor sights in the early morning. Rest from late morning to mid-afternoon. Carry water, a hat and a light layer for cold air conditioning. Read hot South Vietnam: choosing stops that stay comfortable for more.
How do you handle traffic and getting around?
The streets are full of motorbikes, and crossing on foot is hard. Use a car with a driver for each outing and ask the driver to wait. Grab operates in Vietnam6, and a car booking is easier than a motorbike ride for an elder.
At crossings, walk at a steady pace and do not stop. Better yet, avoid crossing and ask to be dropped at the entrance.
What should you check at each sight?
- Are there steps, and is there a lift or a ramp?
- Is there a seat in the shade?
- Is there a clean toilet nearby?
- How long is the walk from the car to the entrance?
For Muslim families
If your grandparents pray and eat halal, check each meal stop. Saigon Central Mosque, completed in 19355, is a landmark in the city. Ask how a kitchen is run, look for a displayed certificate with an issuing body you can name, and carry snacks. See the Muslim family plan for Ho Chi Minh City.
Where should you stay?
Stay in District 1, close to the sights, in a hotel with a lift, a step-free entrance and a bath with a seat or rail. Compare rates yourself, and ask for a quiet room away from the street.
What medicine and insurance should you carry?
Carry regular medicines in the original packs, in hand luggage, with a few days’ spare. Keep a doctor’s note and insurance details on your phone. Vietnam’s ambulance and first-aid number is 1154.
How can you adjust it?
For a shorter trip, drop Day 3’s cruise and rest. For a longer stay, add a half day trip to the Mekong Delta by car, only if everyone is comfortable with a long road. For other ideas, read the Ho Chi Minh City guide.
What will it cost?
Price flights, three nights, a car with a driver, tickets and meals as separate lines. Prices change by season, so enter today’s quotes in the trip budget builder. More plans are in the itineraries section.

Common questions
Is Ho Chi Minh City suitable for elderly travellers?
It can be, with a gentle plan. The city is flat, which helps, but it is hot, busy and hard to cross on foot. Use a car with a driver, rest in the middle of the day, and choose sights with seating or little walking.
How should we handle the heat?
Do outdoor sights in the early morning, rest in an air-conditioned room through the middle of the day and go out again once the heat eases. Carry water, a hat and a light cover for the cold of indoor air conditioning. Stop sooner than you think you need to.
How do we cross the road with grandparents?
Do not cross on foot unless you are at a controlled crossing with a guide. Use a car with a driver for door-to-door rides, and ask to be dropped at the entrance. Walk slowly, at an even pace, as the motorbikes will flow around you.
Should the group stay in one hotel?
Yes. One hotel in District 1 for three nights saves moving bags and lets grandparents rest in a familiar room. Choose one with a lift, step-free access, a bath with a seat or rail, and an easy breakfast.
What medicine and insurance should we carry?
Carry regular medicines in the original packs with a doctor's note, in hand luggage, with a few days' spare. Keep insurance details on your phone. Vietnam's ambulance number is 115. Ask the hotel where the nearest clinic is when you arrive.
