Slow Hoi An With a Cham Islands Day
Quiet days in the old town, with one boat day that is allowed to move.
This plan gives a couple five slow days in Hoi An with one boat day to the Cham Islands. The boat day sits in the middle of the stay, with a spare day behind it. If the sea is rough, you swap days and lose nothing.
Who is this plan for?
It suits two people who would rather linger than collect sights. You want a long breakfast, a bicycle ride, a lantern-lit evening and one day on the water.
It is not a plan for a very short leave. If you only have three nights, read the Da Nang and Hoi An in 4D3N plan instead and skip the islands.
The plan at a glance
- Day 1: arrive in Da Nang, move to Hoi An, walk the lanes early.
- Day 2: a slow old-town day, with a rest after lunch.
- Day 3: the Cham Islands by boat, back by late afternoon.
- Day 4: the spare day: repeat the boat if the sea was closed, or take a beach morning.
- Day 5: a calm last morning and the transfer to the airport.
Day by day
Day 1: arrive and settle
Fly into Da Nang. Direct Kuala Lumpur flights are listed with AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air1. Hoi An lies some 28 km south of Da Nang2, so the transfer is short.
Check in, rest and walk the old town in the evening. Keep dinner simple. The first night is for sleep.
Day 2: a slow day in the old town
Hoi An Ancient Town was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 19993. Go early, while the lanes are cool and quiet, and visit one or two old houses rather than five.
Rest through the hot part of the afternoon. Return at dusk for the lanterns and a river-side dinner. Go to bed on time, because the boat leaves early tomorrow.
Day 3: the Cham Islands
Meet your boat in the morning. The crossing, a swim or snorkel stop, a seafood lunch and a short walk on land make a full but gentle day. Our Cham Islands page explains what the islands offer and how they differ from the mainland beaches.
Be back in Hoi An in the late afternoon. Dinner can be quiet and early.
Day 4: the spare day
If Day 3 went ahead, spend this day on an An Bang or Cua Dai beach morning, a cooking class or a tailor fitting. Do not add another tour.
If the sea was closed on Day 3, this is your boat day. Having it written into the plan is what keeps the holiday calm.
Day 5: fly home
Keep the morning free. Pack, have a last coffee and leave for Da Nang with time in hand.
What should you check before paying for the boat?
Ask the operator these questions, and get the answers in writing or in a message:
- Who decides if the sea is too rough, and when do you hear?
- Is the money refunded or moved to another day if the boat is cancelled?
- Are lifejackets provided for every guest, and does the boat carry a radio?
- Is the pickup from your Hoi An hotel included, and what time do you return?
- Are the lunch and any park or landing fees included, or paid on the day?
Choose a licensed operator with a clear contact, and avoid a boat that looks overloaded. A cheap offer from a street seller is not a reason to skip these questions.
When is the sea least reliable?
On the central coast, the rainy season starts around August to September and peaks in October to November4. Da Nang lists September to December as its wet and typhoon season5.
In those months, book the boat for the second half of your stay and keep the spare day free. Check the forecast the evening before, and accept the operator’s decision without argument. A day on the sand is a fair swap for a rough crossing.
Where should you stay?
Choose by zone, not by hotel name.
- Near the old town: easy evenings, more noise after dark.
- Toward An Bang: quieter nights and a beach walk, with a short ride into town.
Couples on a slow stay tend to enjoy the second zone. Compare rates yourself, and check how early the boat pickup reaches your door.
How can you adjust it?
For a longer stay, add a night and keep Day 4 for the beach. For a stay with a little more sightseeing, swap the spare morning for a half-day at My Son. If you want a base in a bigger town as well, the guide on two bases in central Vietnam helps.
If you would rather not take a boat at all, replace Day 3 with a slow cycling day in the paddy fields and keep the rest as written.
What should you book first?
- Flights, since they fix every other date.
- A Hoi An stay in your chosen zone, especially around festivals.
- The boat, late rather than early, once you know the forecast.
What will it cost?
Price the trip in lines: flights, five nights, the airport transfers, the boat, meals and small extras. Boat prices change by season, so use the trip budget builder with today’s quotes instead of trusting a figure from a page.

Common questions
Is a Cham Islands day worth it on a slow Hoi An stay?
It is worth it if you enjoy the sea and can accept that the weather decides. The boat day gives you clear water and a quieter pace than the old town. If the sea is rough, you lose one outing, not the holiday, because the plan holds a spare day.
Which month is safest for the boat?
The dry months are the easier window. Da Nang lists its wet and typhoon season as September to December, so those months carry the most risk of cancelled boats. If you must travel then, book the boat late in your stay and keep two flexible days.
Should we book the boat from Malaysia or in Hoi An?
Booking in Hoi An once you see the forecast keeps you flexible. Booking early suits a fixed holiday date. Either way, ask the operator what happens if the sea is closed, and get the refund or rebooking answer in writing.
Can we stay overnight on the islands instead?
You can, and it suits couples who want a still evening after the day boats leave. Treat it as a separate decision, since a bad-weather night can strand you. Our Cham Islands page explains the day trip and the overnight side by side.
Is the plan suitable if one of us gets seasick?
Yes, with care. Choose a calm-looking morning, sit near the middle of the boat, eat lightly and carry your usual tablets from home. If either of you dreads small boats, replace the boat day with a beach morning and a cooking class.
