A Mui Ne Beach Weekend from HCMC
One night by the sea for a short weekend, with no day lost to the wrong ride.
If you only have a weekend and you are already in Ho Chi Minh City, Mui Ne is a tempting beach. The sea and the sand dunes are real attractions. The catch is the road, so most of this plan is about choosing a ride and ordering two days so nothing is repeated.
Who is this weekend for?
It suits friends travelling together and couples on a budget who want a quick beach break. It also suits anyone who has already seen the city and wants a change of scene. If you want a long, slow beach week, look at a different island or coast. For a closer sea trip, Vung Tau is easier.
You may start from Ho Chi Minh City after arriving on a flight from Kuala Lumpur. The route to Kuala Lumpur is listed as served by Malaysia Airlines, VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines and AirAsia1. Plan your weekend so that the flight home does not rely on a late return.
The weekend at a glance
- Saturday morning: leave the city by coach or car.
- Saturday afternoon: check in, swim and rest.
- Saturday evening: a seafood dinner and a short beach walk.
- Sunday morning: the dunes or the fishing village at sunrise.
- Sunday afternoon: a late lunch and the return to the city.
Coach or private car?
Choose a coach if you are on a budget and your group is small. It follows a timetable, so you adapt to it. Choose a private car if you want to leave early, stop for coffee or add a second place without waiting.
Confirm the pick-up point, the drop-off point and the return time in writing. Ask how long the ride takes today, because traffic changes the answer. A weekend return on Sunday can be slow, so do not plan a late flight on the same evening.
Day by day
Saturday: the road, the beach and the sea
Leave early so that the journey does not eat the afternoon. Check in, swim and eat a long lunch. Do not plan sightseeing in the heat.
In the late afternoon, walk the beach, then eat seafood at a restaurant near the sea. Halal travellers should ask about the kitchen and suppliers rather than assume. A displayed certificate and an issuing body you can name matter more than a menu photo.
Sunday: dunes at sunrise
Rise early for the sand dunes, when the air is cooler and the light is soft. Wear closed shoes and keep your phone or camera in a bag against blowing sand. Visit the fishing village if the tide and weather suit, and finish with a slow breakfast.
Return after lunch. If you have a car, you can stop in Phan Thiet on the way back. Our Phan Thiet guide explains how it sits beside Mui Ne.
Where should you stay?
Choose the Mui Ne beach strip if you want a pool and sea views, and look for a place with shade and a short walk to restaurants. Choose Phan Thiet if you prefer a city feel with easy markets. See the Mui Ne guide for the zones, and compare rates yourself.
How does the weather change the plan?
Ho Chi Minh City has a tropical savanna climate, with a rainy season roughly May to November and a dry season December to April3. In the South the rainy season starts in May2. In the wet months, swap Sunday sunrise for a later slot and keep a pool day in reserve. Read heat and humidity planning for more help.
How can you adjust it?
If one night feels short, add a second and use the extra day for the fishing village, a cafe stop and a slow swim. If the group wants more variety, look at the south Vietnam short trip, pick two. If the road worries you, choose Vung Tau instead.
What should you book ahead?
- Your coach seats or private car, with times confirmed.
- A beach hotel, especially for Saturday night.
- A dune ride or jeep, if you want one, with the price agreed first.
- Dinner, with dietary and halal needs checked in advance.
What will it cost?
Price the weekend in lines: the ride both ways, one night, dune activities, meals and extras. Rates change by season, so use the trip budget builder with current quotes. For a friendly overview of the city you leave from, read the Ho Chi Minh City guide.

Common questions
Is one night in Mui Ne worth it?
Yes, if you accept that the road takes a large part of each day. One night gives you a sunrise or sunset at the dunes and a few hours at the beach. If you want a long beach rest, add a second night, or choose Vung Tau, which is closer to the city.
Should we take a coach or a private car?
A coach is cheaper and suits small groups who do not mind a set timetable. A private car costs more but lets you leave when you like, stop for lunch and reach the dunes at the right hour. For three or four friends, the price per person may be close, so compare quotes.
When are the dunes best?
Go at sunrise or late afternoon, when the light is soft and the sand is cooler. Midday is hot and flat for photos. Bring a scarf for wind-blown sand, closed shoes or sandals with straps, and water. Check the weather, because clouds and rain change the colour.
Is Mui Ne a good choice in the rainy season?
It can be, but sea and sky are less predictable. In the South the rainy season starts in May. Keep Saturday flexible, choose a hotel with a pool, and leave the dunes for the clearest slot instead of the first available one.
