Cu Chi Tunnels: Which Site and What You Do

A half-day war-history site that suits some groups much better than others.

Cu Chi Tunnels is a half-day war-history trip from Ho Chi Minh City, and it works best when you pick the site, the crawl and the range to match your group. Ben Dinh is closer and easier to fit into a short stay. Ben Duoc is farther, so it needs more road time. Decide before booking who will crawl, who will watch and whether the shooting range belongs in your day.

What is Cu Chi and why do people go?

The Cu Chi tunnel complex is described as 75 miles (121 km) long, with Ben Dinh and Ben Duoc as the two main visitor sites1. It was a network used in the Vietnam War, and today it is a memorial and a teaching site.

People go to understand how ordinary people lived and fought underground, and to see the scale of the work. The tone is serious, so go with an open mind and a calm voice.

Which site: Ben Dinh or Ben Duoc?

Ben Dinh is closer to Ho Chi Minh City than Ben Duoc and has reconstructed tunnels enlarged for visitors2. That makes it the practical choice if you have a short stay or travel with older relatives.

Ben Duoc sits farther out, so you spend longer on the road. Ask your operator which site the tour uses, because the price of the tour does not tell you.

What is the tunnel crawl really like?

The crawl is optional and short, but the space is tight, dark and warm. Climbing out takes effort. Skip it if you dislike enclosed spaces or have joint, back or breathing problems.

If you do try it, wear light clothes, tie back long hair and carry water. A younger group can enjoy the challenge, while others can watch from above with no loss of understanding.

What about the shooting range?

The range is optional and noisy. Sound carries across parts of the site and can upset children, older travellers and anyone who finds weapons uncomfortable at a memorial.

Decide as a group before you arrive, and tell the guide early. If you want a quieter visit, ask to stay away from that area.

How long and when should you go?

Plan most of a half day, including the road leg each way. Ho Chi Minh City has a tropical savanna climate, with a rainy season roughly May to November and a dry season December to April3. Go in the morning, because the tunnels and the walking paths are warm by midday.

In the rainy season, the paths can be wet, so wear shoes with grip. Do not plan a late flight or a dinner reservation on the same afternoon.

How do you reach it from Malaysia and around town?

Kuala Lumpur to Ho Chi Minh City is listed as served by Malaysia Airlines, VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines and AirAsia4. Visitors usually go with a tour or a private car from the city. Grab operates in Vietnam5, but confirm that a ride home is available before you choose a self-arranged route.

Families, seniors and Muslim travellers

With children, choose the ground-level exhibits and keep the crawl for older teens. Our War Remnants Museum with children guide explains how to handle heavy themes kindly.

Seniors can enjoy the site by staying on the main paths and resting often. Muslim travellers should ask about halal meals and prayer breaks before booking. Saigon Central Mosque, completed in 19356, is an anchor for prayer planning in the city.

When is another place a better choice?

If you want a calmer, greener day, compare Cu Chi or the Mekong Delta. If your time is short, read Cu Chi in a short Ho Chi Minh City itinerary. A Cao Dai Holy See visit pairs well with it.

Common questions

What is the difference between Ben Dinh and Ben Duoc?

They are the two main visitor sites at Cu Chi. Ben Dinh is closer to Ho Chi Minh City and has reconstructed tunnels enlarged for visitors. Ben Duoc is farther out, so the road leg is longer. Ask your operator which site is included before you book.

Do you have to crawl through the tunnels?

No. The tunnel crawl is optional. Short sections let you go in and climb out, but the space is tight, dark and warm. Skip it if you are claustrophobic, have knee or back problems, or are travelling with toddlers or elderly parents. You can still enjoy the displays above ground.

Is the shooting range at Cu Chi suitable for everyone?

It is optional and noisy, and the sound carries across the site. Some travellers find it uncomfortable at a war memorial site. Children and sensitive visitors may prefer to stay away from that area. If you do not want it, tell your tour operator at booking.

How long does a Cu Chi trip take?

Plan most of a half day, including the road leg each way. The visit itself is short. The time goes on the transfer, the briefing and the walk between exhibits. Do not stack a late flight or an evening commitment on the same day.

Is Cu Chi suitable for Muslim travellers?

Yes, with planning. Confirm meal arrangements with your operator in advance, because a standard stop may not offer halal food. Ask whether the tour includes a prayer-friendly break. Carrying your own snack and water makes the day easier.
