Day trips from Saigon

Cu Chi or Mekong Delta: Which to Pick

One free day in Ho Chi Minh City and two good options: here is how to choose.

If you have one half day, choose Cu Chi. It is the shorter outing and it gives you a clear, memorable story. If you have a full day, or you are travelling with grandparents or toddlers, choose the Mekong Delta for boats, orchards and slow water.

Which suits which traveller?

Start with who is coming, then look at the detail.

  • Short leave and a half day only: Cu Chi.
  • Grandparents or low mobility: Mekong Delta.
  • Teenagers and friends who like history: Cu Chi.
  • Toddlers: Mekong Delta, with shade and a seat close by.
  • Photographers who like water and green: Mekong Delta.

What do you actually do at Cu Chi?

The tunnel complex is described as 75 miles (121 km) long, with Ben Dinh and Ben Duoc as the two visitor sites1. Ben Dinh is the closer of the two to the city, and its tunnels have been enlarged for visitors2.

You walk through forest, see the reconstructed entrances and can try a short tunnel stretch if you wish. The crawl is optional. Anyone who is claustrophobic or has stiff knees can stay above ground.

Our Cu Chi Tunnels guide explains how the two sites differ.

What do you actually do in the Mekong Delta?

You travel to a river town, board a small boat, cross narrow canals and stop at family-run workshops where coconut sweets and fruit are made. Lunch is usually a sit-down meal. The pace is slow, and that is the point.

The catch is time. The delta needs a longer road leg, so a half-day slot is tight. Read Mekong Delta day trip or overnight if you are unsure, or Ben Tre vs My Tho to compare the two popular towns.

What about heat and weather?

Ho Chi Minh City has a rainy season roughly from May to November and a dry season from December to April3. In rain, the Cu Chi paths turn muddy and the delta boats may be covered or delayed. In the dry months, start early for either trip, because the afternoon sun is strong.

Wear shoes with grip for Cu Chi and a hat for the delta. Carry water in both.

What should you check before you decide?

  • Whether the price includes transport, entrance, lunch and guide.
  • The pickup time, and whether the hotel is on the pickup route.
  • Whether the tunnel crawl is optional, if you travel with children or older relatives.
  • The hours you can spare, using the travel day checker.

Common questions

Which is better for a first trip with only one free day?

Cu Chi is the easier fit for one short day because it is the shorter outing from the city. The Mekong Delta gives you a gentler, greener day, but it uses more of your time on the road. If you have a full free day and want boats and fruit orchards, choose the Mekong.

Which one is better for grandparents?

The Mekong Delta is usually kinder to older relatives. Most of the time is spent sitting on a boat or at a table, with little stair climbing. Cu Chi involves uneven paths, low tunnel sections and standing in the heat. Grandparents can still enjoy it by skipping the tunnel crawl and watching from the surface.

Is Cu Chi suitable for young children?

It depends on the child. Toddlers can feel frightened in dark, narrow tunnel sections, and a pram does not suit the forest paths. Children of school age who like stories and hands-on exploring tend to enjoy it. You can always let them look at the entrance and skip the crawling.

Can I do both in one trip to Ho Chi Minh City?

Yes, on two separate days. Trying to combine them in one day means rushing both and spending the day in a vehicle. If your leave is short, choose one for this visit and keep the other for a return trip, or add a night in the delta.

Do I need to book in advance?

Both outings run as group or private tours and are easy to arrange once you are in the city. Ask what the price includes, such as transport, entrance, lunch and guide, and compare quotes with the package inclusion comparator. Check the pickup time the evening before.
