Cu Chi Tunnels on a Short Saigon Trip

You have two or three days in Saigon and wonder if Cu Chi deserves half of one.

For two or three days in Saigon, Cu Chi is a fit only if war history is a main reason for your trip. Otherwise the city centre uses your time better. A half-day to Cu Chi costs a large part of one day, so decide before you book.

Who should go, and who should skip?

Match the half-day to what you want from Saigon.

  • War history is your main interest: go, and pair it with the War Remnants Museum.
  • First-timers who want the city: skip and stay central.
  • Families with young children: go only if the grounds are enough, with no tunnel crawl.
  • Seniors: go if the road is comfortable, and skip the tunnels.
  • Short leave: pick Cu Chi or the Mekong Delta, not both.

What is Cu Chi, and what do you do there?

The Cu Chi tunnel complex is described as 75 miles (121 km) long, with visitor sites at Ben Dinh and Ben Duoc1. Ben Dinh is closer to Ho Chi Minh City and has reconstructed tunnels enlarged for visitors2.

You walk through forested grounds, see displays and can crawl a short tunnel stretch. Read the Cu Chi Tunnels guide to decide between the two sites.

How does it compare with staying in the city?

War Remnants MuseumA morningIndoors, heavy contentAdults, older children
Reunification PalaceA short visitEasyFirst-timers
Cholon and Thien Hau TempleA relaxed outingEasyCulture and food

How does the weather play in?

Ho Chi Minh City has a tropical savanna climate, with a rainy season roughly May to November and a dry season December to April3. Rain turns the forest paths muddy, and the heat is the main challenge in the dry months. Go in the morning, wear closed shoes and carry water.

What if you are torn between Cu Chi and the Mekong?

Both are half-day or longer trips from the city, and both use up a day. Cu Chi gives history. The Mekong gives river life and food. Our comparison Cu Chi or Mekong Delta helps you choose, and South Vietnam short trip: which two stops covers two-stop plans.

What should you check before you book?

  • Which site your operator uses: Ben Dinh or Ben Duoc.
  • Whether the shooting range is part of the visit, and if you can skip it.
  • Your pick-up time and return time.
  • What is included in the ticket.
  • Your energy for the rest of that day.

If you decide to stay in town, read the Ho Chi Minh City guide. See War Remnants Museum and Reunification Palace for the central options, and browse Attractions and culture for more.

Common questions

Is Cu Chi worth it if I only have two days in Saigon?

Usually not as a first choice. With two days you can cover the city centre and one more big experience. Choose Cu Chi if war history is your reason for coming, and the Mekong Delta or a food evening if you want something lighter.

Which Cu Chi site should I choose?

Ben Dinh is closer to Ho Chi Minh City and has reconstructed tunnels enlarged for visitors. Ben Duoc is further away. Ask your driver or operator which site they use, since this changes both the drive and the feel of the visit.

Is Cu Chi suitable for children and seniors?

The tunnel crawl is optional and tight, and some sites include a shooting range with loud noise. Children and seniors can enjoy the grounds and displays without going underground. Check what is included and agree to skip the loud parts if needed.

How long does a Cu Chi trip take?

Plan a half day including the road in each direction, and more if traffic is heavy. It sits badly with an early flight or a late dinner reservation. Keep the rest of that day light.

What can I do instead of Cu Chi?

Spend the time on the War Remnants Museum, the Reunification Palace, Ben Thanh Market and the old Cholon streets, all in the city. These give you war history and city life without a long road leg, and let you stay near your hotel.
