Sao Beach Phu Quoc: a White-Sand Day
When the resort beach feels busy, a quieter strip of pale sand is a short ride south.
Sao Beach is a stretch of pale sand on the south of Phu Quoc, and it is easier to enjoy on a slow day. Reach it by taxi or Grab from the main resort belts. Bring water, shade and your own snacks, since facilities are simple.
What is Sao Beach?
It is a crescent of soft pale sand and clear water at the southern end of Phu Quoc. Palm trees lean over parts of the sand, and the sea is usually calm. The atmosphere is relaxed, which is the main reason to make the trip.
Phu Quoc has a total area of 575 km22, so the south is a real ride from the northern resorts. Our Phu Quoc guide shows how the island is laid out.
Who is it for?
Young families like the soft sand and the gentle water. Budget couples can enjoy a day with a taxi fare and a simple lunch. Slow couples appreciate the quiet, away from busier resort beaches.
If you want nightlife or a big resort pool, a southern day is not the right match.
What are the sand and the water like?
The sand is fine and light in colour, and the water is clear on calm days. Wind and seasons change the mood.
The slope can be gentle in some areas and quick in others, so check where you let children play. Keep an adult in the water with non-swimmers.
When should you go?
Phu Quoc’s rainy season runs roughly April to November and its dry season roughly December to March1. Dry months give the clearest water and calmest sea.
In the rainy months, check the weather the morning of your trip. Windy days stir up the water and may close boat activities. Leave your day flexible.
How do you reach it from the resort belts?
Take a taxi or Grab, or hire a driver for the day. The ride is long enough that a driver who waits can be cheaper and calmer than two separate trips.
Plan your return before you leave. Taxis can be scarce at remote beaches in the late afternoon. Our guide to choosing a Vietnam beach helps you compare other sand.
What should you bring?
Water, snacks, sun protection, a hat, towels and a bag for wet clothes. Facilities are simple, so do not count on showers or lockers.
Muslim travellers should plan meals ahead, because halal options may be limited. Pack food from your hotel or choose a Muslim-owned place and ask about the kitchen. Never assume a place is halal without checking.
What about seniors?
The walk from the road to the sand can be soft and slow. Seniors can sit in the shade with a cold drink and enjoy the view. Ask about steps before you commit.
When is another place a better choice?
For a lively beach with plenty of dining choices, stay in the main resort belt. For a quieter island with a historic side, see Con Dao. For a bigger comparison, read Island beach or city beach in Vietnam.

Common questions
Is Sao Beach good for young children?
The sand is fine and the water is usually calm, so it suits children who like to dig and paddle. Watch them closely, because shallow water can deepen quickly on some days. Bring sun cover, since shade is limited, and check for lifeguards or staff at the facility you use.
How do you get to Sao Beach from the resort areas?
Take a taxi or Grab from your resort, or hire a driver for the day if you plan to combine it with other southern stops. Agree on the return pick-up time before you leave. A scooter works for confident riders but is not the best choice with young children.
What facilities are there?
Expect simple beachside facilities, with chairs, drinks and basic food in season. Do not assume showers, lockers or a full restaurant, and bring your own water and snacks. Check what is open when you arrive. If you have halal needs, pack your own meals.
