Cham Islands

Cham Islands: Day Trip or a Night on Cu Lao Cham

You are in Hoi An and unsure if the islands deserve a whole day, or a night.

For most first visits, a day trip from Hoi An is enough: boat, swim, lunch and back by evening. Stay a night on Cu Lao Cham only if you want a quiet island after the day boats leave and can accept a cancelled return. Check the sea season before you decide.

What do you get on a day trip?

A day trip covers the crossing, a snorkel or swim stop, a seafood lunch and time on a beach, then the boat returns you to Hoi An. Hoi An lies about 28 km south of Da Nang1, and the old town was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 19992, so many visitors fit the islands into a Hoi An stay.

The day trip is also the easier plan for anyone with limited balance or stamina. You are back in your own bed by night.

What does a night on the island add?

A night adds quiet. Once the day boats leave, the beaches empty. You can walk or swim before the first boat arrives, watch the sunset without a return deadline, and eat in a simple family-run place.

It also adds risk. Rooms and facilities are basic, the sea decides your return, and a missed boat can cost a day. Keep the next day of your plan empty.

When is the sea the problem?

On the central coast, the rainy season starts in August or September and peaks in October and November3. Da Nang lists its wet and typhoon season as September to December, and its dry season as January to August4.

Choose an overnight stay in the dry months. In the wet season, take only a day trip, and only if the boats are running that morning. Our Vietnam weather by month shows the pattern for each region.

What should you check before you pay?

  • Is the boat covered, and are life jackets in the right sizes?
  • What happens to the ticket if the sailing is cancelled?
  • Does the day trip include the snorkel stop and the lunch you expect?
  • Is the island stay refundable if the sea turns?

Common questions

Is a day trip to the Cham Islands enough?

For most first visits, yes. A day trip gives you the boat ride, a swim or snorkel stop, a seafood lunch and time on a quiet beach, then you are back in Hoi An for the evening. It is the safer choice with small children, older relatives, or a tight schedule.

Why would someone stay overnight on Cu Lao Cham?

You stay for what a day trip cannot give you: a quiet island once the day boats leave, an early walk or snorkel before the crowds, and a sunset without a return deadline. It suits couples, photographers and friends who like simple rooms and slow evenings.

Can the boat be cancelled?

Yes. When the sea is rough, boats between Hoi An and the islands can be delayed or stopped. Overnight stays carry more risk because you may be held on the island longer than planned. Build a spare day before any flight, and book flexible accommodation.

Is the Cham Islands trip suitable for young children?

A day trip can work if the sea is calm and you pick a covered boat with life jackets in children's sizes. Avoid it on windy days. Overnight is harder, because rooms are simple and a missed boat has no easy fix. Ask the operator about seats and life jackets before you pay.
