Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City: Cost Differences
Two big cities, one equal itinerary, and a clear view of where each one costs more.
Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City differ most in day trips and airport links, and least in everyday stays and food. To see the real gap, price an equal itinerary in both: the same nights, the same stay quality and the same number of outings.
This page does not quote a general cost-of-living gap. It shows where the two cities differ on a tourist’s lines.
Which lines differ between the two cities?
Compare line by line. Some lines move together, and others do not.
| Line | Hanoi | Ho Chi Minh City |
|---|---|---|
| Stay | Rooms across the old and new districts | Rooms across the old and new districts |
| Food | Local meals and cafes | Local meals and cafes |
| Day trips | Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh | Cu Chi tunnels, Mekong Delta |
| Airport link | Farther out; public bus available | Closer to the centre |
| Weather risk | Cold January, wet summer | Rainy season and dry season |
Stays and food behave alike. The lines worth your comparison time are day trips and airport links.
How do flights compare?
Kuala Lumpur has direct flights to both. Hanoi is listed with AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air1. Ho Chi Minh City is listed with Malaysia Airlines, VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines and AirAsia2.
Fares depend on your date, so compare both for the same days. Our arrival city guide explains how your departure airport changes the choice.
What do the airport links cost?
Noi Bai is about 35 km northeast of downtown Hanoi3. Public bus 86 links it to the Old Quarter at a listed fare of 45,000 VND when we checked4, and fares change. A private car costs more but is calmer after a late landing.
Ho Chi Minh City’s airport sits closer to the centre, so its transfer is a smaller line. Price the route you will really use.
What do day trips add?
From Ho Chi Minh City, the Cu Chi tunnel complex is described as 121 km long5, and you visit one of two sites, so plan a half or full day. From Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh each need a full day. See Ninh Binh vs Ha Long Bay if you are choosing between them.
Does the weather change the cost?
Yes, through what you can enjoy. Hanoi’s coolest month is January, at a mean of 16.4 C7. Ho Chi Minh City has a rainy season roughly May to November and a dry season December to April6.
A wet day cuts the value of an outdoor outing you have already paid for. Read Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City: which trip suits you for the fit question, and the Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City guides for the places.

Common questions
Which city costs more, Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City?
It depends on the line. Stays and food can look alike in both, while day trips and airport links differ. Compare an equal itinerary line by line, with the same nights, the same stay quality and the same number of outings, rather than relying on a general impression.
How do the day trips differ in cost?
From Hanoi, popular outings such as Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh need a full day each and a booked car or tour. From Ho Chi Minh City, popular outings such as the Cu Chi tunnels and the Mekong Delta also need a day each. Count the outings you want, then price them.
Are airport links cheaper in one city?
They differ in shape more than in price. Hanoi's airport is farther out and has a public bus option. Ho Chi Minh City's airport is closer to the centre. Price the exact route you plan to use, both public and private, for both cities.
Does the month change which is cheaper?
Yes. Hanoi turns cold in January, while Ho Chi Minh City stays hot with a rainy and a dry season. Peak weeks raise rates in both. Fix your month before you compare costs, since weather also decides which outings are worth paying for.
Which is better for a first trip on a budget?
Choose the city whose outings match your interests, then compare. If you want old streets and northern scenery, Hanoi fits. If you want energy, markets and southern day trips, Ho Chi Minh City fits. Fit matters more than a small cost gap.
