Ho Chi Minh City

Where to Stay in HCMC for Shopping

Your suitcase will be fuller on the way home, so sleep close to the shops.

For most shoppers, District 1 is the right base. Ben Thanh Market, the Dong Khoi fashion streets and the big malls sit close together, so you can shop in short rounds and rest in between. Pick Cholon for wholesale markets, or Thao Dien if you prefer boutiques and cafes to crowds.

Which area suits which shopper?

Start with what you want to buy, then choose the area.

  • Malls, brands and air-conditioning: District 1 is the easy answer, with the largest cluster on foot.
  • Souvenirs, street fashion and bargaining: District 1 again, around Ben Thanh Market.
  • Wholesale goods, fabrics and household items: Cholon, home to Binh Tay Market.
  • Boutiques, homeware and relaxed cafes: Thao Dien, with a calmer pace.

How do heat and rain change the plan?

Ho Chi Minh City has a tropical savanna climate, with a rainy season roughly May to November and a dry season December to April1. Either way, the city is warm, so market rounds are kinder in the morning.

Put malls in the hottest part of the afternoon. In the rainy season, expect a downpour in the later part of the day and keep a small umbrella in your bag.

What should you check before you book?

Choose a hotel you can reach by a short walk or ride from the shops you care about. Grab operates in Vietnam2, so a ride back with full bags is easy to arrange from your phone.

Ask whether the hotel can hold bags after check-out, because shoppers keep buying on the last day. Budget for the shopping itself in the Vietnam cost worksheet in ringgit, and keep it separate from room costs.

Common questions

Which area is best for a first shopping trip to Ho Chi Minh City?

District 1 suits most first-time shoppers. Ben Thanh Market, the Dong Khoi fashion streets and the large malls are close to each other, so you can shop in short rounds and return to the hotel to rest. Choose another area only if you want wholesale markets or a quieter, cafe-style base.

Is Cholon a good base for shoppers?

Cholon works if you want wholesale-style markets such as Binh Tay and enjoy older streets and food stalls. It is further from the malls and the fashion streets, so you will rely on Grab for those. It suits a second visit or a half-day trip better than a first base.

Can I shop and still keep a family trip relaxed?

Yes. Stay in District 1, shop for a morning, then return for lunch and a rest. Malls give children and grandparents an air-conditioned break. Keep market visits short and agree on a meeting point first, because crowded lanes make it easy to lose each other.

How do I get purchases home?

Check your airline's checked-baggage allowance before you travel, and leave room in your suitcase on the way out. A light foldable bag helps. Keep receipts for larger items in case an airline or customs officer asks, and pack fragile purchases in the middle of clothes.
