Island access

Island Access With Seniors and Small Children

You are travelling with grandparents and little ones, and long piers and boat time worry you.

Phu Quoc is the easiest island for grandparents and small children, because you fly straight in and need no boat. Con Dao and Cat Ba are possible with care. Ly Son is the hardest, with a long road leg and a boat the sea can cancel.

Why is Phu Quoc the easiest?

Phu Quoc has a direct route from Kuala Lumpur, where AirAsia and Sun PhuQuoc Airways are listed1. The island covers 575 square kilometres5, so you need a car with a driver rather than walking. Its rainy season runs roughly April to November, and its dry season roughly December to March4.

Read getting around Phu Quoc for how to cover the island with a car and without a scooter.

What about the islands that need a boat?

Cat Ba needs a road leg from Hanoi and a boat across, which the weather can disturb. Our Hanoi to Cat Ba guide counts the transfer as most of a day. Con Dao needs a short domestic flight, so see how to get to Con Dao.

The Cham Islands are best as a day trip from Hoi An. Ly Son needs a road to Sa Ky and a ferry, which we cover in how to get to Ly Son.

What about Nha Trang’s islands?

Cam Ranh airport lists AirAsia flying to Kuala Lumpur International2, and Nha Trang is 30 km from it3. You sleep in a city hotel and take a day boat from a pier. That gives older relatives and children a bed, a bath and a pharmacy each night. See Nha Trang island boat trips.

What should you check at any pier?

  • The height of the gangway and whether crew will help with steps.
  • Shade and seats while you wait.
  • Child-sized life jackets on board.
  • A road route home if the boat is cancelled.

Our island ferry safety checklist lists the full checks, and seasickness on island boats covers comfort. For islands that suit a slow pace, see Vietnam islands for seniors. More transfer advice sits in Getting around Vietnam.

Common questions

Which Vietnam island is easiest with grandparents?

Phu Quoc is the easiest of the six. It has its own airport with direct flights from Kuala Lumpur, so there is no boat leg at all, and a car with a driver covers the island. Keep each day to one area, and book a resort with an easy path to the beach.

Which islands should we avoid with toddlers?

Ly Son and an overnight stay on Cu Lao Cham are the hardest. Both need a long road leg and a boat leg that the sea can cancel, with simple facilities at the end. They suit older children and adults. Save them for a later trip.

Are boat days safe for small children?

A short day trip in calm weather on a covered boat with child-sized life jackets can work. Skip windy days, keep children seated, and never rely on a stroller on a pier. Our ferry safety checklist lists what to check before you board.

Is Nha Trang a good base for island boat trips with children?

It can be, because you sleep in a city hotel and take day boats from a pier. You can return to your own room each night. Choose a covered boat, a morning sailing and a trip with a lunch stop and rest time, rather than a long hop across several islands.
