Your First Travel Day, Home to Hotel
See the whole first day from your front door to your hotel bed before you book anything.
The first travel day is longer than the flight. Build it from your front door to your hotel bed in stages, add your own times, and keep the evening free. A calm arrival is worth more than an extra activity.
What are the stages of the day?
Write your own time next to each stage.
- Leave home, with a buffer for road traffic.
- Reach the airport and find the right terminal.
- Check in bags, then pass security and immigration in Malaysia.
- Wait, then board.
- The flight.
- Immigration and bag collection in Vietnam.
- The transfer to town.
- Hotel check-in and a first meal.
Vietnam uses Indochina Time (seven hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time) all year and does not use daylight saving5. Check your phone clock when you plan a pickup.
What should you have ready for immigration?
Have your passport at hand with enough validity. Malaysian ordinary passport holders can enter Vietnam without a visa for 30 days1, and one listing requires a passport valid for at least six months after arrival2.
Entry rules change. Confirm them on the official sources before you fly, and see checking Vietnam entry rules for where to look. Keep your hotel address and return ticket ready on your phone.
How long does the transfer take?
Plan a generous block of time for the move into town, and more in the evening rush. Traffic changes the exact time, so test it against your own route.
Noi Bai is about 35 km northeast of downtown Hanoi3. A public bus, line 86, runs between the terminals and the Old Quarter, listed at 45,000 Vietnamese dong when we checked4. Confirm the fare before you go.
Compare the options by your energy and luggage. For a late arrival with elders or toddlers, a pre-arranged transfer is easier than a bus.
Where does the day quietly grow?
Three places add time without warning.
- A late flight, which pushes everything after it.
- An immigration queue when flights land together.
- Hotel check-in that opens later than your arrival.
Ask your hotel about early or late check-in and whether it can hold bags. If you land late and leave early, read about a short stopover in Hanoi and staying near the airport or in the city.
How should you plan the first evening?
Aim for dinner, a short walk and an early night. Keep the first real outing for day two.
Use the travel-day checker to see how your arrival and departure days count against your leave. For terminal planning at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on the Malaysian side, read KLIA or klia2 for your Vietnam flight. More pages are in flying from Malaysia.

Common questions
How long is the journey from my door to my hotel in Vietnam?
Longer than the flight time suggests. Add the trip to the airport, check-in, security, boarding, immigration and bag collection in Vietnam, and the transfer to town. Write your own times against each stage, then add a buffer. The day is mostly gone before you reach the hotel.
Do I need a visa as a Malaysian?
Malaysian ordinary passport holders can enter Vietnam without a visa for 30 days. Rules can change, so check the official sources before you fly. Your passport must also have enough validity left; the listed requirement is at least six months after arrival.
What is the easiest way to get from Noi Bai airport to the city?
Noi Bai is about 35 km from central Hanoi. Options include a pre-arranged transfer, a ride-hailing car or a public bus. Choose by your energy and luggage, not only by price. Seniors and families with toddlers are happier with a transfer arranged before landing.
Should I plan activities on arrival day?
Plan nothing fixed on arrival day. Flights run late, immigration queues vary and the transfer can be slow. Keep the evening open for a short walk and an early dinner, and put your first real activity on day two.
