Mekong choice

My Tho, Ben Tre or Can Tho?

You have one Mekong outing from Saigon: pick the town that fits your time and your group.

If you have a single day from Ho Chi Minh City, choose My Tho or Ben Tre. Both are the nearer delta towns, so more of your day goes to the river and the orchards. If you have a night to spare and want the floating market, choose Can Tho.

How do the three towns compare?

We compare them on a consistent basis: how far from Saigon, what you do there and who it suits.

Which one should you pick by time?

Match the town to the days you can give it.

  • One free day: My Tho or Ben Tre. Leave early and be back by evening.
  • One day plus a night: Ben Tre with a homestay, or Can Tho for the market.
  • Two nights or more: Can Tho, and consider Chau Doc if you want the border end of the delta.

What about the weather?

Ho Chi Minh City has a tropical savanna climate, with a rainy season roughly from May to November and a dry season from December to April1. In the South, the rainy season starts in May2.

Delta days can still be done in the rains, because most activities are under cover or on a boat. Pack a light rain jacket and keep your plan short and flexible. Check our weather by month guide for your month.

What should you check before booking?

  • How long you spend on the road versus in the delta. A day trip with a long drive leaves little time for the delta itself.
  • Whether the boat leg is private or shared, and how many people are on it.
  • Lunch and toilet stops, especially with toddlers and elders.
  • For halal meals, ask in advance and read our Muslim traveller checks.

What is the next step?

Read the Mekong Delta guide first, then the town pages for Ben Tre and Can Tho. For the choice between a day and a night, see Mekong day trip or overnight. To fit it into a trip, use HCMC and the Mekong Delta: a manageable first-trip route.

Tell us how many days you have in Saigon, who is travelling and whether the floating market matters, and we can pick the Mekong town that fits your time.

Common questions

Which Mekong town is best for a single day from Ho Chi Minh City?

My Tho or Ben Tre. Both are the nearer delta towns, so you spend more of the day on the water and in the orchards. Can Tho is further away, and a day trip there means a lot of time on the road. Give Can Tho a night.

Is Can Tho worth an overnight?

Yes, if you want the floating market, which is best seen early in the morning. An overnight lets you reach it at that hour without a very early drive from Saigon. If you do not care about the market, an easier town gives you the same river feel.

Which town suits toddlers or older relatives?

Ben Tre or My Tho, on a day trip with a guide and a short boat leg. Both keep walking and road time modest. Can Tho can work if you stay overnight and rest, but the early market start is hard on small children and elders.

What should food explorers choose?

Ben Tre for coconut sweets and fruit orchards, and Can Tho for river markets and morning noodle stops. My Tho is the easiest taste of the delta. Choose by what you want to see being made.
