Ho Chi Minh City and Mekong, Unhurried
Three days that give the city a day and the delta a proper night.
This three-day plan gives Ho Chi Minh City one day and the Mekong Delta a night. It is built for first-timers who want a city, a river and good food without a rushed day tour. Choose one delta town, keep the pace gentle and you have a trip you can finish without a holiday after the holiday.
Who is this route for?
It suits first-timers and people on short leave, such as a Friday to Sunday break or a long weekend. It also suits couples and friends who want one big city and one rural contrast.
If you have elders or very young children, read the South Vietnam families guide before you book.
How do you get there from Malaysia?
Tan Son Nhat (SGN)5 is the airport. Kuala Lumpur has flights listed with Malaysia Airlines, VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines and AirAsia1.
If you live outside the Klang Valley, AirAsia is listed flying Ho Chi Minh City to Johor Bahru2, to Kota Kinabalu3 and from Penang, where Ho Chi Minh City is the only Vietnam destination listed4. Compare current schedules on the airlines’ own pages, using our flight routes data page.
The route at a glance
- Day 1: arrive and see central Ho Chi Minh City.
- Day 2: travel to the delta, boats and villages, overnight on the river.
- Day 3: a calm delta morning, return to the city, fly home in the evening.
Day by day
Day 1: Ho Chi Minh City
Ho Chi Minh City had 14,002,598 people in 2025 in the city proper8, so the first rule is to stay in one area. Base yourself in District 1, where most first-time sights sit close together.
Walk in the morning: the Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Central Post Office and the Reunification Palace. Eat lunch near Ben Thanh Market, rest through the hottest hours and return for a river-side or street-food dinner. Keep rides short and book them by app.
Day 2: to the delta and the river
Leave early with a private driver or a tour that leaves from your hotel. Plan most of the morning for the road. Then take a boat on the canals, visit a small workshop for coconut candy or fruit, and cycle a village lane.
Spend the night in the town you chose. Evening on the river is the part day trippers miss: cooler air, lit boats and quiet.
Day 3: the calm return
Wake early. The delta is at its best in the first hours, with lighter traffic on the water and softer heat. Have breakfast at a market stall, walk to the river and leave after a short morning.
Back in the city, allow a buffer before your flight. Do not plan a sight at the end. A relaxed lunch near the airport is enough.
Should you pick Ben Tre, My Tho or Can Tho?
The three towns feel different. Ben Tre is quiet and green, My Tho is the easiest to reach, and Can Tho is a bigger town with a floating market. Our Mekong route choice guide compares them. For one night, a small guesthouse or homestay in a quiet zone is more rewarding than a big hotel in town.
When should you go?
Ho Chi Minh City has a tropical savanna climate, with a rainy season roughly May to November and a dry season from December to April6. In the South, the rainy season starts in May7.
Dry months are easier for boats and village lanes. In the rainy months, rain can arrive in heavy bursts, so carry a poncho and keep the schedule loose.
Where should you stay?
- Ho Chi Minh City: District 1 for a first visit, so you can walk to sights.
- Delta night: a small stay by the water, not a large hotel in the centre.
Compare rates yourself, and check whether your stay will arrange a boat pickup.
How can you adjust it?
Add a day to include the Cu Chi Tunnels, as shown in the 4D3N Ho Chi Minh City, Cu Chi and Mekong plan. For fewer road legs, choose My Tho and return in the evening. If you only have two stops to pick, read short South Vietnam trip: which two to pick.
What should you book ahead?
- Flights, since arrival and departure times set the days.
- A District 1 stay for Day 1.
- The delta night and a driver for Day 2 and Day 3, with pickup times confirmed in writing.
- Muslim-friendly meals, if needed. Ask how the kitchen is run and who certifies it.
What will it cost?
Price flights, two nights, the delta transfer, the boat, tickets and meals as separate lines. Rates move by season, so put current quotes into the trip budget builder and use the travel-day checker to see whether Day 2 is too full. More ideas are on the itineraries page and in the Ho Chi Minh City guide.

Common questions
Are three days enough for Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong?
Yes, as a first taste. One day is for the city, one for the delta with a night on the river, and one for the way back. You will not see everything in either place, but you will see both properly, which beats a rushed day tour.
Is one night in the delta really better than a day tour?
For most first-timers on short leave, yes. A day tour spends much of its time in a vehicle and arrives when the boats are busiest. A night lets you see the river early and late, and walk a village lane at your own pace.
Which part of the Mekong should we choose?
Ben Tre suits a quiet coconut and canal stay, My Tho is the easiest to reach and Can Tho suits the floating market. For three days, choose one. Our guide to the three routes helps you pick by your group and your energy.
Which month is best for this trip?
Ho Chi Minh City has a dry season from December to April and a rainy season from about May to November. The dry months are easier, but you can travel in the rain if you plan indoor stops and carry a light poncho.
Can we fly from our own Malaysian city?
From Kuala Lumpur, yes, on four airlines. AirAsia is also listed from Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu and Penang. Check the airline's own schedule for your dates, since listings change, and look at the Malaysia to Vietnam flights data page.
