Packing for Vietnam in Cool, Hot and Rainy Months
Your suitcase should follow the month you travel, not just the country you are visiting.
Pack for the month and the region together. In the cooler months you need a warm layer for the north. In the rainy months you need proper rain gear for the central coast. In the hot months you need light clothes that dry fast and a plan for midday.
How do the seasons differ across Vietnam?
Northern Vietnam has four seasons, while the central and southern areas have two, a rainy season and a dry season1. That is why one packing list does not work for the whole country.
Use this page for the season, then use Vietnam packing list by region for the region.
What do you pack for the cool months in the north?
Hanoi’s coolest month is January, at a mean of 16.4 C2. The air is damp, so it feels colder than the number suggests.
Pack thin layers: a long-sleeve top, a jumper and a light jacket. Add a scarf and closed shoes. If you plan a Sa Pa trip, note that its annual mean is 15.3 C and January averages 8.7 C3. Take a warmer jacket for that part and leave it at the hotel in Hanoi when you are in the city.
What do you pack for the hot months?
In most regions the hot months mean heat and humidity more than sun. Choose loose cotton, a wide hat, sunglasses and a small cooling towel.
Carry water, a spare top in your day bag and a plan to rest at midday. Save outdoor sights for the morning or late afternoon.
What do you pack for the rainy months?
The rain is not the same everywhere. In the Red River Delta, around Hanoi, it starts in April or May and ends in October or November4. On the central coast it starts in August or September and peaks in October and November5. Da Nang lists its wet and typhoon season as September to December6.
Ho Chi Minh City’s rainy season runs roughly May to November7. Rain there tends to come as a heavy shower rather than all-day drizzle, so a light jacket and quick-dry clothes cover most days.
What rain kit is worth packing?
- A hooded rain jacket or poncho; umbrellas are awkward in crowded lanes.
- Shoes that can get wet and dry overnight.
- A waterproof pouch for phone, passport and cards.
- A spare top and socks in your day bag.
- A plastic bag or two for wet clothes.
How do you plan for storms?
Vietnam is affected by six to eight typhoons or tropical cyclones a year8. Not every one reaches the places you plan to visit, but central months from September onward need a flexible plan.
Book flexible tickets where you can. Keep one slack day. Read Central Vietnam in rainy months for stops that still work indoors.
Where to check your month
The weather by month guide shows each region side by side, and the weather data table gives the raw figures. If your month points to a different region, try the route chooser. More tools sit in Planning tools and methods.

Common questions
What should I pack for Vietnam in the rainy season?
A light rain jacket, quick-dry clothes, shoes that tolerate wet streets and a waterproof pouch for your phone and passport. Umbrellas are awkward on busy pavements, so a hooded jacket is easier. Pack a spare set of socks and one extra top for your day bag, and expect some outings to move indoors.
Is Hanoi cold enough to need a coat in winter?
A light coat or a good jacket is sensible. Hanoi's coolest month is January, at a mean of 16.4 C, with damp air that makes it feel colder. Thin layers work better than one heavy coat, because indoor spaces and midday sun are warmer than mornings and nights.
Do I need to pack differently for the hot months?
Yes. Choose loose cotton or linen, a wide hat, sunglasses and a small towel for your neck. Carry a refillable water bottle and a spare top in your day bag. Plan outdoor sights for early morning or late afternoon, and keep midday for lunch and rest.
How do I pack if I am not sure about the weather?
Build a base of light clothes, then add one warm layer and one rain layer. These two cover most surprises in any region. Check the forecast a few days before you fly, and remember that Vietnam's regions differ, so Hanoi's forecast does not tell you about Hue or Saigon.
