What to Pack for North, Central and South Vietnam
One suitcase, three very different regions: pack for where you sleep and what you will do there.
Pack by region, not by country. The north needs a warm layer in the cooler months, the central coast needs rain gear for part of the year and the south needs light clothes that dry fast. One basic kit covers all three; the layers and the rain gear are what change.
Why does one list not fit all of Vietnam?
Northern Vietnam has four seasons, while the central and southern areas have two, a rainy season and a dry season1. Your suitcase has to follow that split.
Add your activities on top: a city break needs walking shoes, a beach week needs swim wear and a mountain trip needs warm layers.
What goes in every bag?
These items work in all three regions.
- Light cotton or quick-dry tops and trousers.
- Comfortable walking shoes and a pair of sandals.
- A thin rain jacket or poncho.
- A hat, sunglasses and sun cream.
- A power adaptor. Most Vietnamese households use unearthed sockets that take type A and C plugs6, so Malaysian plugs need an adaptor.
- Your regular medicine, in its original packaging.
- A small amount of cash in dong, which is the local currency, code VND7.
What is different in each region?
| Item | North | Central | South |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warm layer | Yes, for cooler months | Light one, for evenings | Not needed |
| Rain gear | Light, in the wet months | Strong, in the wet months | Light, in the wet months |
| Shoes | Walking shoes with grip | Walking shoes and beach sandals | Breathable walking shoes |
| Extras | Scarf, long sleeves | Swim wear, quick-dry towel | Sun hat, cooling towel |
How cold does the north get?
Hanoi’s coolest month is January, at a mean of 16.4 C2. That is a long way from Kuala Lumpur, so a jumper and a light jacket are reasonable.
Sa Pa is colder. Its annual mean is 15.3 C, and January averages 8.7 C3. If a Sa Pa side trip is in your plan, pack proper layers, not a single heavy coat.
What changes on the central coast and in the south?
On the central coast, rain starts in August or September and peaks in October and November4. Pack a sturdy rain jacket, a dry bag for your phone and shoes that can get wet.
Vietnam is also affected by six to eight typhoons or tropical cyclones a year8. This is a reason to leave room in your plan, not a reason to cancel.
Ho Chi Minh City has a rainy season from about May to November and a dry season from December to April5. Heat is the bigger issue there, so pack breathable fabrics and a spare top for the day bag.
What should a Muslim traveller add?
Add a prayer mat and a small compass or app, modest loose clothing and a spare scarf. Pack snacks you trust for the first day. Read Muslim travellers in Vietnam: meal and prayer arrangement checks before you finalise anything.

Common questions
Do I really need a jacket for Vietnam?
Only for the north in the cooler months, and for Sa Pa or other high places at any time of year. Hanoi's coolest month is January, at a mean of 16.4 C, which feels cold if you live in Malaysia. For central and south Vietnam, a thin rain jacket is more useful than a warm one.
What is the one item people regret not bringing?
A power adaptor. Most Vietnamese households use unearthed sockets that take type A and C plugs, so a Malaysian type G plug needs an adaptor. Pack one for each person who charges a phone, or one multi-plug adaptor for the room. Hotels sometimes lend them, but do not count on it.
How should I pack for a trip that covers two regions?
Pack for the cooler region and add one light layer, then rely on cotton and quick-dry clothes for the warm one. One rain jacket works for both. Choose shoes that handle a long walk in the city and a wet path, and leave the third pair at home.
What should I bring for a family with young children?
Bring a small first aid pouch, hand wipes, any regular medicine in its original packaging, a spare set of clothes in your day bag and a light fold-up rain cover. In the north, add a warm layer for each child. For the south, add sun hats and swim wear that dries fast.
Can I buy things in Vietnam instead of packing them?
Yes for basic clothing, toiletries and rain ponchos, which are easy to find in cities. Bring your own medicine, prescription items, adaptors and any food or hygiene need tied to faith or health. Buying a warm jacket in Hanoi is fine if the weather surprises you.
