Banh Mi

The crusty Vietnamese sandwich you will want for a quick breakfast, and the fillings to ask about.

Banh mi is a Vietnamese sandwich built on a light, crusty baguette. It is filled with a protein, pickled carrot and radish, cucumber, fresh herbs and chilli. You say it roughly like “bun mee”.

How will you meet it on the trip?

You will find banh mi at carts and small shops from early morning, from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. The vendor splits the bread, adds a spread, fills it and wraps it in paper. It is an easy first breakfast or a pocket lunch for a day out.

What should Muslim travellers ask?

Fillings vary by cart, and pork can sit in the cold cuts, the pate or the spread. A cart may also use one knife and board for everything.

Never assume a cart is halal. Ask what is in the filling and the spread, and look for a displayed certificate and its issuer. Our meal and prayer checks list the questions to ask.

  • Bun cha: Hanoi’s grilled pork and noodle lunch, covered in bun cha.
  • Cao lau: the thick noodle dish of Hoi An, in cao lau.
  • Pate: a liver spread used inside the bread.

Common questions

How do you say banh mi?

Say it roughly like bun mee, with a short rise on the second word. You do not need perfect tones. Pointing at the filling you want and saying banh mi with a smile will get you a sandwich at almost any street cart.

What is inside a banh mi?

A light baguette is split and filled with a spread, a protein, pickled carrot and radish, cucumber, herbs and chilli. The protein changes by cart, so look at what is on display. Eggs and grilled chicken are common alternatives to cold cuts.

Is every banh mi halal?

No. A pork-free filling can still meet a shared knife, a pork spread or a cart that also sells pork. Ask what is in the sandwich and the spread, and look for a displayed certificate and its issuer. If you cannot confirm, choose a plain vegetarian option.
