Hari Raya and Deepavali Breaks: Planning Vietnam

A festival week is short, popular and shared with every other family: plan around that.

A festival break is a good time for Vietnam, and a busy one. The same week is free for every family in Malaysia, so flights and rooms fill early. Book the fixed parts first, choose one region that suits the weather, and keep the schedule light.

Why does a festival week feel so busy?

Everyone has the same days off. Families who rarely travel together book at the same time, and airlines and hotels know it.

Kuala Lumpur International recorded 63,121,653 passengers in 20251. A festival week sits on top of that normal load. Expect full flights, longer queues and fewer choices if you wait.

Our guide to Vietnam during Malaysian school holidays explains the same pressure on prices and crowds.

What should you book first?

Lock the parts that run out first, then relax the rest.

  • Flights, ideally in one booking so a delay on one leg is handled together.
  • The first and last nights, near the airport or a short drive from it.
  • Any transfer that carries elderly relatives or small children.
  • Popular day trips that need a set time slot.

Leave the middle days loose. Restaurants and walks do not need booking weeks ahead, and a loose day lets you rest after a long family lunch or a late night.

Which region works for your festival month?

The month decides this more than the festival does. Northern Vietnam has four seasons, while the centre and south have two2.

On the central coast, rain starts in August or September and peaks in October and November3. In the Red River Delta, rain ends in October or November4.

So if your break falls in the wetter months, the north is easier to defend than the central coast. Our school break and Vietnam weather guide lays the months out, and the route chooser turns it into a region.

How do you keep festival traditions and meals on the trip?

Say what matters before you book. If you want to be back for a family lunch on the day, fly home the evening before.

Muslim families should read the meal and prayer checks first. In Hanoi, Al-Noor Mosque on Hang Luoc Street is an anchor for Muslim-owned places nearby5. Confirm prayer times with the mosque.

Malaysians can stay in Vietnam without a visa for up to 30 days6. Check the official rules before you go, as listed in Checking Vietnam entry rules from official sources.

What is a calm festival-break plan?

Pick one region and one or two bases. Add one easy day after arrival and one before you fly home. Keep early starts to a minimum when grandparents or toddlers are along.

A short break may also be a long weekend in disguise. See using a Malaysian long weekend for Vietnam for how to count the days honestly.

Then price it with the trip budget builder. More seasonal advice is in Seasons and who it suits.

Common questions

When should I book a Vietnam trip for Hari Raya or Deepavali?

As soon as your leave is confirmed. Festival weeks are the same for every family in Malaysia, so seats and rooms go together. Lock flights and the first and last nights first, then fill the middle. Keep the rest flexible until your itinerary is settled.

Is a festival week long enough for Vietnam?

Yes, if you pick one region and keep transfers short. Count arrival and departure days as half days. A single base or two close bases works well. Trying to see the north, centre and south in one festival break uses most of your holiday in airports.

Can we keep prayers and family traditions on a festival trip?

Yes, with some planning. Tell the planner early about prayer times, meals and any family gathering you want on the day itself. Ask for a flexible morning, and check that the hotel and day tours leave room for it. Plan the trip around the day, not the other way round.
