Phong Nha Caves as a Two Day Add-On

Decide if two extra days of caves are worth the road before you lengthen your leave.

Phong Nha is worth two extra days if you love caves and quiet countryside and have already seen Da Nang and Hue. It is not worth it on a tight leave or if long road legs wear you down. This page lays out the transfers and the booking points so you can decide.

Who is this itinerary for?

It suits return visitors and friends who want something less crowded than the headline stops. If you are still deciding, read Is Phong Nha worth adding to a central trip? first. If this is your first visit to central Vietnam, what else to see on a return visit may fit better.

What is Phong Nha?

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2003, with extensions in 2015 and 20251. It is about 40 km northwest of Dong Hoi, the capital of Quang Binh2. Dong Hoi is your gateway town.

How do you get there?

Hue’s airport has no direct international routes3. Da Nang is the nearest international airport to Hue, about 80 km south of Phu Bai4. Fly into Da Nang, then travel north.

From Hue, the route runs north by road or train to Dong Hoi, then on to the park. Vietnam Railways’ official booking site is dsvn.vn5, so check timetables there. From Da Nang the leg is longer, and the Hai Van crossing adds to it, so stay a night in Hue first. Read Da Nang to Hue via Hai Van Pass for that leg.

The route at a glance

  • Day 1: travel north to Dong Hoi, then into the park, settle and rest.
  • Day 2: a cave morning, a river or countryside afternoon, and the return north.

What does each day look like?

Day 1: the transfer

Treat Day 1 as a travel day. Leave early from Hue, take the road or train to Dong Hoi, then a car into the park. Plan most of a day for the whole journey. Check in and eat early.

Walk the village or river edge in the evening, and go to bed. A cave morning is better when you are rested.

Day 2: caves and the return

Go to the caves in the morning, when groups are smaller. The park sells entry for its show caves. Phong Nha Cave is reached by boat, and Paradise Cave is reached on foot, so ask at the visitor area what is open on your day.

After lunch, take a gentler outing by river or countryside. Then begin the return north. Do not schedule a late flight on this day.

What about Son Doong?

Son Doong’s biggest chamber is over five kilometres long, 200 m high and 150 m wide, and a British team publicised it after a 2009 survey6. It is an expedition-style trip, not a day visit, so it sits outside this add-on. If it is your goal, plan it as a separate trip and book far in advance.

When should you go?

On the North Central coast, the rainy season starts around August to September and peaks in October to November7. Caves can close and roads slow in heavy rain. Choose the drier months, and keep a spare day in the plan.

Where should you stay?

Stay near the park for caves at dawn, or in Dong Hoi for easier transport. Choose by area, not by hotel name, and ask about pickup times. For more on the central coast, read how to choose stops on the Central Vietnam coast.

How can you adjust it?

If you only have one spare day, skip Phong Nha. If you have three, add a night near the caves. Compare it with a quiet beach in Da Nang or Quy Nhon if caves are not your priority.

What should you book ahead?

  • Transport from Hue to Dong Hoi, and the car to the park.
  • A stay near the park, especially at weekends.
  • A guide or hotel contact to confirm which caves are open.
  • Any larger cave expedition, far in advance.

What will it cost?

Price transport, one or two nights, park entry, the boat and meals as separate lines. Prices change by season, so use the trip budget builder. Check the days in the travel-day checker, and read the Hue guide and the Da Nang guide.

Tell us which base you are leaving from and the spare days you have, and we can judge whether Phong Nha fits or whether the days are better spent elsewhere.

Common questions

Is Phong Nha worth two extra days?

It is worth it for travellers who like caves, rivers and quiet countryside, and who already know Da Nang and Hue. It is a poor trade if you only have a few days of leave or dislike long transfers. For a first trip, central coast sights give a better return.

Is it better from Hue or from Da Nang?

Hue is closer. Hue's airport has no direct international routes, but road and rail run north to Dong Hoi. From Da Nang the leg is longer, so it suits a night in Hue first. See our Hue day trip or overnight guide to plan the break.

How do we book the caves?

Show caves sell entry through the national park, and boat trips are arranged at the visitor area or through your stay. Confirm the day's open caves with your hotel or guide, because water levels can change access. Book the larger expeditions well ahead.

Can we visit Son Doong in a two day add-on?

Son Doong is an expedition-style trip, not a day visit, so it sits outside this add-on. Its biggest chamber is over five kilometres long, 200 m high and 150 m wide. If that is your goal, plan it as its own trip and book far ahead.

What about rain and floods?

On the central coast the rainy season starts around August to September and peaks in October to November. Caves can close and roads slow in heavy rain. Keep a spare day, check forecasts and have a plan to return.
