Vung Tau Beach Break From the City
A sea breeze for your long weekend, if you can spare the road to reach it.
Vung Tau gives Ho Chi Minh City a sea edge for a long weekend. It is a calm add-on if you have three nights or more. It is a poor add-on if your leave is short, because the road eats the beach.
Who is this plan for?
It suits friends and couples on a budget who want a swim, a simple seafood meal and a change from the city. You are not chasing sights. You want a sea breeze, a walk and a lie-in.

The plan at a glance
- Day 1: arrive in Ho Chi Minh City, walk District 1.
- Day 2: leave the city mid-morning and settle by the sea.
- Day 3: a calm Vung Tau morning, return to the city before the Sunday peak.
- Day 4: a free morning in the city and your flight.
Day by day
Day 1: arrive in the city
Ho Chi Minh City had 14,002,598 people in 2025 in the city proper1, so plan your exit around the rush. Check in, rest and keep dinner close to the hotel. Our Ho Chi Minh City guide lists the main sights if you want to add a morning.
Day 2: out to the coast
Leave after the morning rush. If you go on a Friday, leave before the evening rush or wait until Saturday. Plan a half-day for the transfer, whatever mode you pick, and ask your stay in Vung Tau about a pickup point.
Settle in, swim in the late afternoon and eat seafood by the water. Keep the evening open. The Vung Tau page covers the beach zones and the town.
Day 3: a calm morning and the return
Swim early, walk the seafront and see the main viewpoint. Keep it to one or two stops. Then leave before the Sunday afternoon peak, and give yourself a buffer.
If you are flying on Day 4, return to a hotel near the city centre, not to a new stay. You will sleep better in a familiar room.
Day 4: a free morning
Take a final market walk, buy snacks and go to the airport with time in hand.
What is worth the detour, and what is not?
Worth it: a swim, seafood by the sea, a seafront walk and the town’s main viewpoint. Not worth it: three separate sights, a rushed day trip or a long list of side stops. The trip pays you back in rest, not in sights.
If you want a more active day, a Cu Chi tunnels outing or a Mekong day suits the city better.
When should you go?
Ho Chi Minh City has a rainy season roughly May to November and a dry season December to April2. In the South, the rainy season starts in May3.
Dry months make the beach easier. Public holidays, which include 1 January, Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year), Hung Kings, 30 April, 1 May, 2 September and 24 November4, fill the coast with city families. National Day is a two-day holiday, or four days when it falls Friday to Tuesday5. Avoid those dates, or book early.
How do you get around?
Use Grab, which operates in Vietnam6, for rides in both places. For the city-to-coast leg, pick a coach, a shared car or a private car, and weigh comfort against cost. Ask how the pickup works and where you are dropped.
Where should you stay?
- City: District 1 for the first and last night.
- Vung Tau: near the beach, within walking distance of food.
Compare rates yourself. For heat and comfort tips, read hot South Vietnam: choosing stops that stay comfortable.
How can you adjust it?
With only two nights, stay in the city and skip Vung Tau. With five nights, add a Mekong night, as in Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta. If you really want a beach holiday, compare an island beach and a city beach.
What should you book ahead?
- Flights.
- The two hotels, with the first and last night in the city.
- The city-to-coast transfer, with the pickup point confirmed.

Common questions
Is Vung Tau worth adding to a Ho Chi Minh City trip?
It is worth it if you have a long weekend or more and want a sea breeze, simple seafood and an easy pace. It is not worth it on a three-day trip, where the transfers would eat the beach. Keep a minimum of one night there.
How long does the transfer really take?
Our sources hold no verified figure. Plan a half-day on each side for leaving the city, the road and checking in. Roads out of the city are likely to be heavier on Friday evenings, and the return on Sunday afternoons. Ask your driver what to expect.
Is it better as a day trip or an overnight?
An overnight is better. A day trip leaves little beach time after the road, and you return when the traffic is worst. One night lets you swim early, eat by the sea and come back at a quieter hour.
When should we avoid going?
Avoid Vietnam's public holidays, since the coast fills with city families. National Day on 2 September is a two-day holiday, or four days when it falls Friday to Tuesday. In the rainy months, expect afternoon showers and keep a plan for indoor time.
What should friends on a tight budget look for?
Share a room or apartment, eat where locals eat and use one car for the group instead of separate rides. Skip paid extras you will not use. Enter your own quotes in the budget builder to see what each person pays.
